Tom Yates. "I often tell people that Mother Nature and I have a partnership going. She supplies me with the raw weathered wood and I try to bring it to life. This whole partnership started over ten years ago when I picked up a piece of wood and saw a face in there just waiting for someone to bring it out. Since that time my work has taken me down a very interesting and spiritually fulfilling path. With the ability to do something that you love and combine it with the great Chesapeake Bay has truly been a great adventure in life."

"To get my pieces I explore the shorelines of the Bay and it's tributaries seeing nature in all its glory while keeping a ken eye out for that hidden gem. Mother Nature's weathered exterior on the wood holds hidden treasures once the carving begins. Each piece has its own characteristics, colors, textures, and most of all a weather-beaten look. No piece can be duplicated."

Growing up in an artistic house helped Thomas Yates find his true calling in the art world. His mother helped Thomas find an appreciation for art at an early age by showing him all the beautiful things that nature has to offer. It's through these teachings and the love of working with his hands that Thomas fell in love with carving. Combining the natural look of weather-beaten wood with the carving flowing through the piece creates a unique look for each piece. Thomas has been carving and developing his gift for the past 11 years. The Eastern Shore of Maryland in Queen Anne's county is where Thomas finds his inspiration and raw materials. He shares his life with his beautiful wife Lisa and their 4 children, Maggie, Carolina, Rachel, and James.

These are the pictures I took of the piece Thomas made for me.
The wood is Popular wood found along the shores of the Chester River.
Thank you Thomas,
