Wingate, George Wood, 1840 - 1928
American lawyer; practiced in New York City. As an officer in
the New York National Guard regiment, formulated (1867)
rules for systematic rifle practice; instrumental in organizing
the National Rifle Association of America (1871) and was its
president for 25 years.
George W. Wingate also helped found the
Public School Athletic League (PSAL) in 1903.
