FWS Online Weather Classic: The well-defined eye of Hurricane Lili is seen moving northwestward towards the northern Gulf coast in this NOAA photograph taken midday, October 2, 2002.  Lili, at the time a dangerous Category 4 hurricane, miraculously weakened only hours before making landfall 24 hours later near rural Louisiana's Vermillion Bay.  Despite knocking out power and flooding roadways in several communities, unexpected weakening prevented the widespread catastrophic damage feared only hours earlier.
