The bus that a Francis Howell School District driver was forced to
operate needed its transmission rebuilt, according to the
Coleman-Taylor Transmission shop, which repaired the vehicle.

The second gear was burned out, said Jimmy Newman, who
manages the shop in St. Peters.

The driver has filed a grievance against the bus company, First
Student Corp., for refusing to switch her bus when she requested a
change due to safety concerns.

Three school bus drivers in the Francis Howell School District were
fired Friday, less than a month after they told the School Board
about what they said were safety hazards at the bus company.

First Student Corp., formerly known as Ryder Student
Transportation, sent letters to the three drivers stating, "The
reason for your discharge is your intentional false and
misleading public statements intended to interfere with the
company's business and client relations and to bring discredit
to the company...

A long-awaited audit of the Francis Howell School District revealed
that several factors contributed to the district's financial decline -
lack of oversight, policy and controls over spending, critical data
errors and bidding issues.

The district's transportation vendor, First Student Corp., then
known as Ryder Student Transportation, also paid $1,013 for
lodging for the board president, Cathy Elsea, and former
finance director, John Hutchison, to attend a conference in Miami.

The Francis Howell School District was short even more bus
drivers Friday afternoon, angering parents as the district
continues to seek solutions.

Interim Superintendent Dan O'Donnell said 32 routes were not
covered Friday afternoon, up from 24 the previous day.

A shortage of bus drivers has officials at Francis Howell and First
Student Corp. scurrying to fill the gaps. Students are arriving late
to school and coming home late.

Pat Houlahan, the district's director of administrative services,
sent a letter to parents Wednesday night explaining and apologizing
for a shortage of 24 drivers and offering solutions administrators
are considering.
Meanwhile,... First Student, the company that handles
transportation for the district, sent a letter from John Ziegle.

35 miles up Interstate, promised and brought in new school buses.
91 days after contract was signed, new buses left Savannah and the
old buses we returned."
