Van Nuys Airport History Van Nuys Airport opened in 1928 under the name Metropolitan Airport. The airport expanded during the 1930s adding a control tower. It became the site for numerous films. In 1942 the US Army constructed facilities here and the airport was renamed the Van Nuys Army Air Field. The Navy and Lockheed jointly built facilities here. In 1949 the City of Los Angeles acquired the airport renaming it the San Fernando Valley Airport. A new tower was built in 1951. In 1957 the airport received the name Van Nuys Airport. During the 1960s the number of facilities and traffic increased. In 1968 the current control tower opened. By the 1970s traffic continued to increase making it the busiest general aviation airport in the nation. In the 1990s the Air National Guard moved from the airport to NTD NAS. Annually the Van Nuys Airport Expo draws about 350,000 spectators.
