The
first few hours seemed very traumatic for our little girl.
One of the first things the nurses do is complete the 'PKU' blood test. Simply put: they slice open the baby's heel with a razor and
squeeze it until they get the amount of blood they need.
We felt a little frustration due to our first baby nurse (Old Lady
Hitler) and her unwillingness to move the baby prep process along so that Charly
could see Logan before they both fell asleep from exhaustion.
Once the baby was born, scrubbed, interrogated, and bled, the hospital
was kind enough to return her to our possession.
The nurses felt it necessary to provide some basic information for us. They verified we did in fact have a baby.
She is a girl. They even wrote down what they thought she should be named.
Good thing they agreed with us about the name.
Logan Nichole Corlette Allred was born November 21, 2002, at 8:37 p.m.
Now
that everybody has been introduced to the baby, I need to establish one thing.
Clark, this is for you: REAL
burritos come from Texas.
Here
is the first close up. The hospital provides small hats with pink or blue ribbons
for the babies. The hats are pretty
much cheese cloth tubes tied at one end. Surprisingly,
she did not spend much time in this pose. The
first few days Logan was as active as she had been inside the womb.
Charly was pleased that all the activity she endured for so long did not
cease upon Logan's achieving larger quarters.
Logan tried sucking her thumb one time. She hasn't done it since. She sucks her wrist if she gets really hungry and we have not obliged her whims yet. She has long fingers and a firm grip. Her little hands make it interesting trying to do anything within arm's reach of her. Some of the nurses had problems setting her down-she wouldn't let go.
She
weighed 7lbs 5oz and stretched out to 20".
Her hair started out jet black and curly, but has since straightened out
and started lightening. All in all,
it was nice to have a truly beautiful baby and not have to pretend an ugly baby
was cute just because she is ours. We
are thrilled that she is healthy and finally here.
