ES: Swingin'.

GC: Nice piece there from Oscar Peterson. I'm here with Eric Stoltz on Morning Becomes Eclectic. He picked out this set. Will you pick out the rest of the music for the show today?

ES: I would love to. What a great job.

GC: Yeah, not too bad. Why don't you tell us what we just heard there?

ES: We just heard Led Zeppelin, something that's not heard enough, on KCRW anyway...

GC: It's heard enough in some circles...

ES: (laughs) Some stations...

GC:(laughs)

ES: A band called "Big Joe" which actually was just the cello solo. We'll play a litle more of them later. It consists of several people- Bob Eane and Carter Burwell. And Carter Burwell wrote the music for all of the Coen Brothers' movies.

GC: Um-hmm.

ES: And I worked with him on Rob Roy, well, I worked, he wrote the music for that and I approached him about doing the music for Mr. Jealousy and he said, "Well I'm booked for two years and you can't afford me anyway. But , why don't you come and see this band I'm in called 'Big Joe'."

GC: Sort of a budget, the budget...

ES: Right. And the band consists of two accordionists and two cellos and a percussionist. And they agreed to do some of the music for the movie. Them and the band "Luna."

GC: Un-hunh...

ES: And, uh, it was a very fruitful collaboration. And, of course, Oscar Peterson who has nothing to do with the movie, but the man's a genius!

GC:It's a nice tune doing George Gershwin's "Lady, be good!".

ES: Yep.

GC: And, uh, yeah when you picked out Zeppelin to open it up, it reminded me a little of the "Fast Times at Ridgemont High" era.

ES: Yeah

GC: Was that your first?

ES: Yeah that was my very first film.

GC: Was that you? Oh no, you weren't the one knocking your head...

ES: the skull?

GC: ... with the speaker was it?

ES: Was it me?

GC: That was probably Sean [Penn]?

ES: I can't remeber. Yeah, I think that was Sean.

GC: But you were right there with him, hanging out...

ES: I was...

GC: ... egging him on.

ES: Yep.

GC: (laughs)We're talking to Eric Stoltz. You have a new film that's gonna be closing the LA...

ES: Los Angeles Independent Film Festival. A *worthy* festival tonight and all weekend, uh, playing independent films here in Los Angeles and Mr. Jealousy is the closing film.

GC: Unfortunately, sold out, that film.

ES: Yeah, but there's still tickets for some of the other films which are...

GC: Yeah, well if people are interested in finding out more about the festival and the other films, the number is 888-ETMTIXS. That's the way it's spelled anyway. And apparently, here are 65 of some great new indie films happening over there. Uh, so the new film you star- I know we don't want to talk too much about...

ES: Oh please. Play some more music.

GC: (sighs) Alll-right.

ES: Let's play. Let's play this one. This tune...

GC: Okay, well this is from a previous film you were in.

ES: Yeah, this is from Grace of My Heart and actually...Arianna, the producer, just told me... I have a tape of Elvis Costello doing a rough demo of some of the songs from Grace of My Heart. But I struggled with whether I should bring it and play..., but I thought it was unethical.

GC: Way to tease us.

ES: (laughs)

GC: We're going to have to send you back home to get that.

ES: I just brought the cds.

GC: Here we go. Eric Stoltz' [he stammers over the last name here] set on "Morning Becomes Eclectic".

Elvis Costello, "God Give Me Strength" (video) (lyrics here)

The MacGuffins (instrumental piece)

Earth, Wind, and Fire, "Shining Star" (lyrics here)

GC: A little "Shining Star" from Earth, Wind, and Fire. The set put together by our special guest Eric Stoltz.

ES: Taking you back...

GC: Obviously a favorite of yours?

ES: Oh since I was a kid. I actually had a - dream of mine that I was the only 12 year old white trumpet player in Earth, Wind, and Fire.

GC:(laughs)

ES: It's stayed with me all these years.

GC: And also heard a band I'm not too familiar with... The MacGuffins?

ES: The MacGuffins, they're a local...

GC: cinematic, uh, name

ES:... Irish band

GC: ...Hitchcock name?

ES: Exactly, I don't know if they're named after Hitchcock or what but they're a local band. They play alot around town and before that was...

GC and ES simultaneously: Elvis

GC: From Grace of My Heart

ES: Right

GC: A film that you were in. Co-written by Burt Bacharach. And they're working on a whole album together.

ES: Yeah, I know it.

GC: Can't wait. It will be great. Here with Eric Stoltz who stars in the film Mr. Jealousy as well as executive produces the film.

ES: Exactly, yes.

GC: So you were busy. How did you handle all the, uh, your differing roles in there?

ES: Well I like to think I handled them gracefully...

GC: Heh heh.

ES: But uh, I'm sure I didn't (laughs)

GC:(Laughs) Oh well.

ES: No. I think I did a good job.

GC: Well the results were very good. So I guess you must have done a good job.

ES: Thanks.

GC: So we have uh, we're going to have to wrap it up unfortunately. We've got one more song to play. But I do want to let everybody know again about Mr. Jealousy. The new film starring and executive produced by Eric Stoltz that will be screened as part of the closing night gala of the Los Angeles Independent Film Festival that's taking place this weekend. ES: The last uh track is the title tune to the film from a band called "Luna" and it's a cover of "Jealous Guy". Obviously, the John Lennon song. And here it is.

GC: Thanks for coming by Eric. [I] appreciate it.

ES: My pleasure.
