It's A Boy!

When we first went out, it looked like she was sleeping. Then Christi noticed something funny by her tail. It was the baby!! After a moment of panic, someone called Steve and grabbed the foaling kit.

'Twas the hour before foaling, and the mare had finally settled down to sleep. She had been pacing for most of the evening, and Christi bet me that she would foal sometime that night.

At this point, I thought Christi and I were going to have to deliever the baby ourselves. The head and knees were out already! Luckily, Steve showed up minutes later.

Mom was wondering what we were doing back there. Time kept ticking and Steve wouldn't show.

Mom went right to work trying to dry the baby. It was a cold night, and being wet didn't seem like a good idea.

Well rested, she got up to check the baby with Steve. Congrats Mama! It's a boy!

Unfortunantly, Mom spooked and jumped up, ripping her plancenta in the process. This isn't good since now the placenta doesn't weight enough to help pull out the other half. It becomes a problem if she retains it for more than a few hours.

First kiss! (Ah Ma... not in front of the camera!)

Ah.... good milk and now a good nap. Full belly, soft straw, and a warm home. What more can a colt ask for?

In the stall, he finally finds Mom's udder and starts drinking like only a boy can. Steve tied a water bag to the placenta in hopes that the weight would pull the placenta out. It did after about an hour and much sweating on our part (we almost had to call the vet.)

After napping, he's ready for more exploration. Gotta figure out what all the buckets and hay are for.
