There are many different types of machine. Each machine has been developed for a particular industry, and then also used in others. The types are listed below.

Flat Bed : This machine, popular with carton printers and trade foilers, feeds sheets automatically under a large flat heated head.

Cylinder : Consisting of a flat heated bed for the dies and a cylinder which rolls the work over the bed.

Platen : Consisting of two flat plates(one for the dies, the other for the substrate), which meet at a slight angle and press the substrate and dies together.

Periphery : A jig or holder rolls the substrate across a flat die

Roll On : The substrate is placed on a conveyer and is taken under a rotating silicon wheel which rolls on the foil to all the protruding parts.

Label Press(Rotary or flat) :Both are reel to reel presses. The flat machine  has an up and down head that presses onto the label stock, whist the rotary has two cylinders which meet at one point where the pressure and heat sandwich the foil and label stock together. The die on this latter press is also a cylinder.

Semi Automatic : This machine requires  individual feeding of the substrate into the machine. They are most often pneumatic, and have up and down heads which engage when finger buttons or a foot pedal is pressed.

Continuous Sheet Fed Foiler : This machine feeds continuous stationary through a multi head foiler. It is used mainly for security items like cheques, tickets and gift vouchers.

Hand : Normally small, and operated by a handle. This machine applies pressure through a toggle action, thus increasing the power of the human arm.

Coding : Either inline or end of line basic heated fully automatic head that print a code, best before date of Bar code.
