1999 Ford Escort Factory radio removal

This is how I removed the factory tape deck in my Escort. The factory radio and the heater controls were made as one unit in order to add a aftermarket cd player you will need a faceplate with the heater controls built in. For this page I'm just going to stick with the removal of the radio

Tools you will need: Small flathead screwdriver (to help with the clips), Ford dinn radio removal tool pictured below. (You could use thin nails that fit too)

First, you will need to make a note to where the hot/cold switch is. If your like me write it down or take a picture. Now put your head down near the gas petal. Turn your head to your right (toward the console). You will see a round black cover with a white center clipped on a rod. This is what it will look like:

You'll need to pull that round disk straight off (toward the drivers door) you will see a round black cover with a white center clipped on a rod. There is a little tab on the white piece, pull on it and pull the whole black cover/shroud off till you get like this:

Now when you get to his point you can sit back in the seat and get your dinn tools and stick them in the holes that are on the left and right of the radio. You will feel a click when you push them in should be about 2 digits of your finger.

Lighly pull the tools toward you with slight pressure outward you may need to wiggle the tools:

You should be able to pull the radio from the dash about 12" You'll see a big white plug on the right side of the radio:

You'll see a tab on that plug push it in with your finger and pull the back of the plug out

Under the radio kind under that previous white plug you will see a glow in the dark plug inside a black clip.

Move the black tabs outward and pull the glow in the dark plug out.

Now you need to unplug the antenna by grabbing the round silver part and pull straight out toward the motor

Now on to the left side of the radio, you will see 2 black flat plugs that physically go into the radio

You should be able to grab the black part and pull them straight out toward the motor. Take not as to which plug goes where (black to the left, gray to the right)

Now the radio should be free to come out. Just be sure to feed the heater control cable through the opening as you continue to pull out the radio.
