After the Civil War, Frederick Douglass continued to 
fight vigorously for civil rights. He held several federal offices, and became 
the most powerful black man in America. A young visitor once asked Douglass what 
he should do with his life. 
"Agitate," said Douglass. "Agitate, 
agitate."
