Notes for George B. THURTELL
The 1900 U.S. Census for Jo Davies County, Illinois (Vol. 100, ED 32,
Sheet 12, Line 65) shows George Thurtell as age 18, born in September
1881 in Iowa, employed all months of the year as a salesman in the
Butcher Shop. He is living with his mother, Emma Thurtell, and his
sisters in Dunleith Township, Jo Davies County, Illinois, and his mother
is shown as born in Iowa and his father in Wisconsin.
He left the Jo Davies County, Illinois, and Dubuque County, Iowa, area
shortly after 1900 and never kept in touch with his sisters, who thought
he might have gone to Hawaii, where his father was living. Research done
in 1998 showed that he lived in California from shortly after 1900 until
his death in 1956.
He is listed in the U.S. Census Soundex for California for 1910 as Geroge
B. Thurtelle (008 0120 0371), as age 28, living in Oakland, Alameda
County, California, enumerated with Ernest Martin. His relationship is
shown as lodger. The census record itself shows his place of birth and
that of his parents as United States and that he was employed as a waiter
in a restaurant.
He is shown as George Thurtelle in the 1920 U.S. Census for California
(Volume 60, ED 601, Sheet 9, Line 84) as age 38, born in Iowa, living at
1455 1/2 Third, Santa Monica, Los Angeles County, Calfornia. This record
shows his father was born in Wisconsin and his mother in Iowa and that he
was renting the house where he lived and working for wages as a cook in a
hotel. He was living with his wife, Ellen Thurtelle, age 24, who was
born in Missouri and whose father was born in Kentucky and mother in
Missouri. Also living with them was their daughter, Victoria Thurtelle,
age 1 2/12, who was born in California and whose father was born in Iowa
and mother born in Missouri.
Social Security records for Social Security number 559-10-8473 show that
George B. Thurtell was born in Dubuque, Iowa, on September 10, 1881. He
filed for Social Security benefits in Santa Monica, California, about May
20, 1947. He died in about August 1956 based on the Social Security
claim termination item file. Neither he nor any survivor on his account
received Social Security benefits after 1962 when the current Social
Security master beneficiary record system was begun. The Social Security
number had been issued in California.
One lookup request of the California Death Index showed George Thurtell,
no spouse initials listed, born in Iowa September 10, 1881, died in Los
Angeles County, California, July 18, 1955, Social Security number
559-10-8473, State File Number 68059. A different lookup request of the
California Death Index shows he died July 18, 1956, in Los Angeles
County, California. The death certificate from Los Angeles County,
California, Registrar's Number 14468,confirms the date of death of July
18, 1956, and shows that George Thurtell was born September 10, 1881, in
Iowa and was 74 years old at the time of his death at the Los Angeles
County General Hospital, 1200 North State Street, Los Angeles,
California, where he had been a patient for three months. His residence
according to the death certificate was 114 Ashland Avenue, Santa Monica,
California. It shows he was a male Caucasian and the son of Walter
Thurtell, who was born in Wisconsin, and Emma Bechtel, who was born in
Iowa. The informant for the death certificate was the Los Angeles County
General Hospital. The death certificate shows he was divorced, a United
States citizen, and never in the military service. The cause of death is
shown as probable bronchopneumonia, secondary to old sub???? hemorrhage
with a contributing condition of hyperthyroidism. The death certificate
information is typed and clear with the exception of the handwritten
cause of death information. The funeral director was Pierce Brothers
Mortuary, and he was cremated August 7, 1956, at Chapel of the Pines.
