Creative Photo Journalism

Stephanie M. Diani
Principal Photographer

Photojournalist Stephanie Diani is one of a lucky few whose passion and work have merged into a successful career. Attracted to the camera from an early age and possessing an abiding curiosity, she uses photography as her tool to explore society and the world around her.

During the hours before and after work, Stephanie has also completed several documentary projects on street life in Los Angeles. She is presently pursuing a photo-story project about the population of low cost residences in downtown Los Angeles. Interested in people and in capturing ‘the decisive moments’ of everyday experience, her photographs depict the essence of life at a variety of commonplace locations. Her most recent projects focused on race track culture, the streets of downtown Los Angeles, and a day in the life of an aging street performer on Hollywood Boulevard. She has had several one-woman shows: in Santa Barbara's Karpeles Museum, Abilene Texas at the Center for the Arts, and in New York, on City Island. (See photo-credits for more information).

Educated in classical philosophy with a bachelor’s degree in Classical Archaeology from the University of California at Santa Barbara, Diani graduated at the top of her class with highest honors. Still believing that her calling lay in photography, she took several day jobs just out of school and began working as a photo intern for the local weekly newspaper, the Santa Barbara Independent. Her experience there led her to freelance work at the local daily, the Santa Barbara News Press, which in turn led to positions with the Los Angeles Times, Community News Sections, in Santa Monica, California. Staff photographer for two twice-weekly papers, "Our Times" of Santa Monica and the "Westside Weekly" (circulation of 40,000 and 160,000 respectively). She enjoyed shooting feature stories, sports and portraiture for those newspapers. Although she considered positions with other major newspapers, she has decided to pursue the challenges of freelance photography from her home in Los Angeles. She has accepted assignments from such newspapers as the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, The Sacramento Bee, Electronic Engineering Times the Washington Post, The Christian Science Monitor, People Magazine, Random House, etc.

In black and white and color chrome, she has photographed in Paris, France, Venice, Italy and throughout the mountains and islands of Belize.

She can be reached at the 'contact information' provided below. We hope you enjoy the following selection of images, both from her personal projects and assigned work. Please feel free to review a summary Resume and a summary Photo Credit list.
