St.John de la Lande |
(the latter two were Jesuit lay assistants or donnés) began their
ministry at the great Jesuit missionary station of Sainte Marie, near what
is today Midland, Ontario. Goupil was almost
deaf but trained in medicine; he had attempted to enter the Jesuits and
was rejected. Goupil was
the first of the North American martyrs, killed with an axe handle
on Sep 29, 1642.
Jogues was with Goupil, had his fingers chewed off by the Iroquois and then became the slave of the Iroquois chief for some months, was ransomed by the Dutch, returned to France, and then set sail for North America where he was tomahawked Oct 18, 1646.
The following day, St. John de la Lande, a veteran woodsman and Jogues'
companion, was also tomahawked at Ossernenon (Auriesville, NY). Thus, Goupil,
Jogues, & de la Lande died in what
is today the United States.
