It is after 1:00 p.m., May 31, 1889. An all night rainfall has caused the rivers to overflow their banks. Some residents of this valley town have sought the safety of higher ground. Others have moved their belongings to the second flood. It continues to rain...the people watch the rising water. Many are accustomed to spring flooding here. It is now 4:00 p.m. They continue to watch as the waters rise. They wait for the rivers to recede and then the unexpected happens; a great reservoir, located fourteen miles above Johnstown, Pennsylvania ruptures. 20,000,000 gallons of water are forced down the valley of the Conemaugh river and head towards the people of Johnstown. Within minutes, the flood wave strike Johnstown and 2,209 souls have been swept away. But, have they been swept away forever? |
