ADIEU TO POLYTECHNIC SCENE I ---- ADMISSION We entered the red brick castle together, when it was 1988・s October, boys and girls acquainted with one another, and happily turned a new leaf over. We met numerous lecturers, some of which were kind and tender; Occasionally we lunched with them together, until the waiter said, :thanks for your 10 thousand dollars!; Skipping mass lectures was one of our favour, we could simply photocopy the lecture notes later; But we would take great pains to attend seminars, for failing to do so frequently we might be asked to see Barry J. Cooper! SCENE II ---- PODIUM LIFE The library was always full of our peers, noises were as loud as thunder; Some of us boys stood at the corners, secretly staring at our sweet Belinda. We went to the canteen for lunch and sometimes dinner, we must make haste because there were seminars a minute later; Although the food and drinks there were cheaper, their quality was as poor as a beggar.s! We hardly had leisure time to go to the cinema, or to play Street Fighters at video game centres; We had no choice but to work harder and harder, because millions of tons of assignments were pressing on our shoulders! All work and no play gave us an ache in the stomach, what followed was a diarrhoea but there was no toilet paper; Sometimes our bodies were in the Lecture Theatre, but our minds were somewhere in Southern California. SCENE III ---- Romance Lonely boys might fancy for lovers, every now and then they discussed together, :who is the most beautiful girl among our peers? Fiona, Belinda, Portia or Susanna?; Courting girls is a difficult skill to master, first of all get her telephone number, then flowers, love letters, going to the cinema, whatsoever, and after treating her to a dinner, hugs and kisses until the morning after. If you・re brave enough to knock on her door, find all possible ways to please her father and mother; But there is a golden rule to remember ---- don・t go in with only 2 bunches of bananas! Some friends did turn into lovers, softly hugging each other in dark Podium corners; Eye to eye, mouth to mouth, hearts beating together, to each other their hearts and souls totally surrendered. Sometimes I heard a boy said, :I・ll keep you safe under stormy weathers!; and a girl said, :If you・re poor I・ll find another!; Lovers met and parted like chapters in a drama, it・s hard to find someone who would stay with you forever. SCENE IV ---- HARDSHIP O Lord! Times were as tough as sandpapers, in rainy days we couldn・t find a shelter, marking schemes were as tight as Malaysian rubber, low marks on mid-year tests made our legs start to quiver. :Studying, nightmares, waking up, studying.............; We were just like prisoners! Our bodies, minds and souls looked like badly battered; Every minute and hour we could not but wonder, :will our dreams of being a Qualified Accountant be ultimately shattered?; Every year in summer and winter, examinations were getting near; Though we might have made up our minds to study harder than ever, at that very moment numerous assignments again appeared. We then had to face a harsh dilemma ---- studying for the exam. or keeping on with the assignments but dying a martyr later? If we failed in the exam. it would be game over, all we could do then was to go home and say, :Mama Mia!; SCENE V ---- GRADUATION After all in 1991 we graduated altogether, the pick of the bunch passed the exam. with flying colours; In this red brick castle we・d spent 3 long summers, let・s place a full stop on our nightmares and say, :Hallelujah!; Rex won all of Big Six・s offers, but some were still lonely job hunters; Poor guys! They were going to die of hunger! Because they were running out of dollars! SCENE VI ---- GRADUATION DINNER Later we had our graduation dinner, boys were as smart as Arnold Schwarzenneger, girls were prettier than Demi Moore, Schubert in his Mercedes Benz shouted, :I・m a millionaire!; We searched for food here, there and everywhere, until our bellies were full of desserts, wines and beers; Oh dear! I know you・ve got a big stomach, but don・t forget to mind your table manners! Gabriel sang great love songs of popular idol singers, Ah Man was so in the mood but we lacked a philharmonic orchestra; At 10 o・clock we said, :Sayonara! Casablanca!; When I was back home I played Beethoven・s :Moonlight; in C sharp minor. SCENE VII ---- ANOTHER CHALLENGE Those days were gone forever, now we・ve earned our degree honours; Are you now a big spender, or still an Audit Junior? To climb up the social ladder, we・ve got to be as fierce as a tiger; In the commercial arena we fight with one another, hurting even our brothers and sisters. Morever we have to pass Level 3 earlier, or we・ll always be a loser; Lucky ones passed it with flying colours and said, :No wonder! I・m a man of outstanding calibre!; Unlucky ones keep on thinking over, :is it worthwhile trying harder and harder? Working and studying non-stop from January to December, in between are there any happy hours?; SCENE VIII ---- REMINISCENCE Those are the moments for you to share, and I hereby wish you・ll be happy ever after; Today if we boys and girls happen to meet on a street corner, can we still recognize one another? Of this verse I am the writer, and this is the long-awaited last chapter; For now I must say to you Sayonara, but this doesn・t mean goodbye forever. |
