The destruction of The Giant Buddhas by the Taliban Regime in Afghanistan was a warning of theyr barbaric nature.
This is not about religion, it's about ART. Just as religion icons serves as a symbol of faith that inspired it, these works are metaphors for the constant striving of man to rise above his corporeal existence and reach for the spiritual realm regardless of his faith.
While I could care less about a faith's self righteous, intolerant followers, I certainely care about the monumental works they create and/or destroy. The Sistine chapel, the Al-Aqba mosque and Angkor Wat are equal holy, not because of the religion that claim them, but because of the transcendant souls that created them. Their striving touches a resonant human chord that precedes religious dogma by milenia.
