This is in response to the CT Mercenary Cruiser Design Derby proposal in message 1287 (yeah, from January 2000, but better late than never). This is an armored merchant that could carry a 40 member mercenary contingent.

COMMENTS
The Pyracantha class armored merchant was designed as a more survivable
variant of the Tanzanite class Type M subsidized liner (q.v.). It uses the same
hull form, and a generally similar deck layout. The most obvious external
difference between the Tanzanite and Pyracantha classes is the latter's
substitutioin of a narrow, armored bridge window instead of the two deck tall
"jewel" window for the Tanzanite's passenger lounge.
The addition of significant armoring on the Pyracantha class has resulted in the
loss of stateroom windows all over the ship, a shifting inward of all habitable
spaces, and moving some of the crew quarters from deck 2 to deck 4, and the
substitution of a backup bridge where the passenger lounge is on the
Tanzanites. Stronger internal bracing and more comprehensive subdivision of
the ship makes the Pyracantha class fell more cramped than the Tanzanites.
Pyracanthas have a dedicated "garage" on deck 1 for an vehicle of up to 10
tons displacement. The garage has a cargo door/ramp allowing the AFV to
exit directly to the landing field. The garage can be used for cargo if no craft is
carried. The cost of a vehicle for the garage is not included in the purchase
price of the ship. Pyracanthas also have a 2 ton medical bay on deck 1 which
has a single operating table that the doctor is able to use to quickly stabilize
most injuries that are not immediately fatal, and place the patient in either a low
berth or in a stateroom (depending on type and amount of damage). Small
engineering areas, airlocks, and turrets are on the outriggers/wingtips which
touch the ground outboard of the main deck 1 area. There is a passage from
each wingtip along the forward edge of the wing leading to the deck 3
passenger areas.
Deck 2 is mostly crew quarters and engineering.
Deck 3 has the backup bridge, which is used to coordinate mercenary
activities on the ground if the vessel is used by a mercenary company. This
deck also has passenger quarters, fuel, cargo space, the backup
computer, the main engineering space, and the bay for the ship's Launch.
One of the ship's crew is normally given a secondary job of piloting the
Launch.
Deck 4 is mostly passenger quarters and fuel.
Deck 5 is the main bridge, the main computer, and the upper airlock. There is
also a small crawlspace leading back to an access to the ship's Launch bay.
Pyracanthas are used by some mercenary companies that feel the armor,
Fusion turret, and streamlining make up for the otherwise somewhat less
capable ship in comparison to the typical Type C mercenary cruiser. In
mercenary use, the three stewards are typically not employed, and the twenty
staterooms are used by up to 40 mercenaries. Pyracanthas are also used by captains
that advertise a "get you there - guaranteed" type of service. A small number of
Pyracanthas have been used as yachts for adventurous nobles. There are also rumors
of its use by various intelligence services (both Imperial and megacorp).
