According to the National Crime Survey administered by the Bureau of the Census and the National Institute of Justice, it was found that only 12 percent of those who use a gun to resist assault are injured, as are 17 percent of those who use a gun to resist robbery. These percentages are 27 and 25 percent, respectively, if they passively comply with the felon's demands. Three times as many were injured if they used other means of resistance. - G. Yeah, I remember that electric thrill of seeing "by Loren K. Wiseman" for the first time. It's quite a boost to the ego. Also, getting asked for an autograph, that's a unique feeling. It seems so extraordinarily weird the first time it happens, and that gradually changes over the next few dozen times to a nice, warm feeling inside. The thrill never really goes away -- for me, at least. I've been to a lot of conventions over the years, and I've seen some people who look bored by the whole thing -- as if it were some chore their agent stuck them with, and I pity them. I've also seen people who will write until their fingers cramp, and chat a little with each fan while they're writing, and seem just as thrilled at the end of three hours of autographs as at the start. - Loren K. Wiseman

If power corrupts, being out of power corrupts absolutely. - Douglass Cater, American author and educator

The 1930's taught us a clear lesson: aggressive conduct, if allowed to go unchecked and unchallenged, ultimately leads to war. Our policy has been one of patience and restraint, but now further action is required - and it is under way; and these actions may only be the beginning... But the greatest danger of all would be to do nothing. - President John F. Kennedy

There might not be anything fishy going on at all, but that's no reason to stop making perfectly good conspiracy theories. - chongo

I received a case from our helpdesk about a customer who didn't know how to change her screen size. The help desk had tried to guide her but she just got lost and she wasn't pleased with the result when they tried to fix it with our remote tool either. I called her up and asked her to right click on her desktop and select properties on the little box that appears. She told me that nothing appeared when she right clicked and that the help desk had already asked her to try that. Intrigued by the perplexity of her problem I went to her office and looked at her computer. It was turned on which was a good start. I sat down and right clicked on the desktop and was about to select properties when I heard her say "Oh, your using the mouse, how interesting". What was I supposed to use!? - Karl

Information Wants To Be Free. Information also wants to be expensive. Information wants to be free because it has become so cheap to distribute, copy, and recombine---too cheap to meter. It wants to be expensive because it can be immeasurably valuable to the recipient. That tension will not go away. It leads to endless wrenching debate about price, copyright, 'intellectual property', the moral rightness of casual distribution, because each round of new devices makes the tension worse, not better. - Stewart Brand [anu.edu.au]

The important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them. - Sir William Bragg

The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. - H.P. The only purpose for which power can be rightfully exercised over any member of a civilized community, against his will, is to prevent harm to others. His own good, either physical or moral, is not a sufficient warrant. - John Stuart Mill, On Liberty (1859)

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. - C. And now that the legislators and do-gooders have so futilely inflicted so many systems upon society, may they finally end where they should have begun: May they reject all systems, and try liberty, for liberty is an acknowledgement of faith in God and His works. - Frederic Bastiat

It is the soldier, not the reporter, Who has given us freedom of the press. It is the soldier, not the poet, Who has given us freedom of speech. Halloween Safety Tips

I'm sure that you've all seen these rules before and really, they're just common sense. But since we're coming up to that time of the year, I think it's wise to review them. Something about this time of year can play havoc with otherwise sensible people.

Just in case you have forgotten the rules for a safe and Happy Halloween.

1. When it appears that you have killed the monster, NEVER, EVER go check to see if it's really dead.

2. Never read a book of demon summoning aloud, even just mumbling to yourself, if you can't read silently you have no business with such a thing anyway!

3. Do not search the basement, especially if the power has gone out.

4. If your pets speak to you in Latin or any other language which they should not know, shoot them immediately. It will save you a lot of grief in the long run. However, it will probably take several rounds to kill them, so be prepared. This also applies to people who speak with somebody else's (usually deep) voice.

5. When you have the benefit of numbers, NEVER pair off or even split up and go it alone.

6. As a general rule, don't try to solve puzzles that open portals to Hell.

7. Never stand in, on, or above a grave, tomb, or crypt. This would apply to any other house of the dead as well.

8. If you're searching for something which caused a loud noise and find out that it's just the cat, GET THE HELL OUT!

9. If appliances start operating by themselves, lights go on and off, a fire just appears in the hearth, or doors open and close by themselves - do not check for drafts, do not check for short circuits; just get out!

9 1/2. Why, why, why would you even think of sleeping in that house if that happened?

10. Do not take ANYTHING from the dead.

11. If you find a town which looks deserted, there's probably a good reason for it. Don't stop and look around!

12. Don't fool with recombinant DNA technology unless you're sure you know what you're doing. And even if you're sure you know what you're doing, just don't fool with it!

13. If you're running from the monster, expect to trip or fall down at least twice. Also note that, despite the fact that you are running and the monster is merely shambling along, it's still moving fast enough to catch up with you.

14. If your companions suddenly begin to exhibit uncharacteristic behavior such as hissing, fascination for blood, glowing eyes, increasing hairiness, and so on, kill them immediately.

15. Stay away from certain geographical locations, some of which are listed here: Amityville, Elm Street, Transylvania, Nilbog (you're in trouble if you recognize this one), the Bermuda Triangle, or any small town in Maine.

16. If your car runs out of gas at night on a lonely road, do not go to the nearby deserted looking house to phone for help. If you think that it is strange because you thought you had half of a tank, shoot yourself instead. You are going to die anyway, and most likely be eaten.

17. If you find that your house is built upon a cemetery, now is the time to move in with the in-laws. This applies to houses that had previous inhabitants who went mad or died in some horrible fashion, or had inhabitants who performed satanic practices in your house.

17 1/2. When the exorcist/whatever declares the house is "clear", your troubles have just begun.

18. Never look under the stairs. or the bed. or in the closet. or the cellar, attic.....you get the idea.

19. Don't take anything back to the lab that looks like it might hatch real soon - especially if it is transparent, something inside is moving, or it appears to be lighted from within. In the same vein, never bend over to look into anything that looks like an opening egg.

20. If you don't want to be chased by the monster (or serial killer, shark, alien, giant snake, radioactive ants, etc.)...don't wear skimpy clothes or wet T-shirts.

21. If you are being chased by a car, don't run into the building, the car will corner you and rev it's engine menacingly before destroying the house, business, police station, etc. Whereas, if you just run down the road it can't catch you.

22. Never unwrap the mummy. (See........Always good to have duct tape on-hand just in case something unravels).

23. Going faster than some barrier: sound, light, gossip...is generally bad news for someone somewhere.

24. When flying on an airplane, at night, in a storm, don't raise the shade to see what that noise out on the wing was.

25. Don't talk to sheriffs wearing reflecting sunglasses in towns that are so small the gas station has one pump.

26. Silver works - garlic doesn't.

Happy Halloween !!

COMM Now, you all know the purpose of this mission. It is a kamikaze mission. Your sacred task is to destroy the ships of the American fleet in the Pacific. This will involve the deaths of each and every one of you. Including you.

PILOT Me sir?

COMM Yes you. You are a kamikaze pilot?

PILOT Yes sir.

COMM What are you?

PILOT A kamikaze pilot sir.

COMM And what is your function as a kamikaze pilot?

PILOT To lay down my life for the Emperor sir!

COMM How many missions have you flown on?

PILOT Nineteen sir.

COMM Yes, I have the reports on your previous mission here. (FLIPS THROUGH EACH ONE) Let's see. Couldn't find target, couldn't find target, got lost, couldn't find target, forget to take headband, couldn't find target, couldn't find target, headband slipped over eyes, couldn't find target, came back with headache...

PILOT Headband too tight sir.

COMM Vertigo, couldn't find target, all the rest, couldn't find target. Now I don't think you've been looking very hard.

PILOT Yes I have sir. I've looked all over the place!

COMM You see, it's not actually that difficult bearing in mind that we do have a highly sophisticated reconnaissance unit whose job it is to tell you where to find the targets.

PILOT Well, it's not always accurate sir, sometimes one can search for hours and not see a single aircraft carrier.

COMM Well, where exactly have you been looking for these aircraft carriers?

PILOT Er, well sir...

COMM (FLIPPING THROUGH NOTES) ... I mean, I notice for instance that you seem to have more or less ignored the sea. I would have thought that the sea was a promising area.

PILOT Yes sir...

COMM And that the airspace directly above Tokyo was not. And another thing...

PILOT Yes sir?

COMM Skip the victory rolls.

PILOT Sir, you're being unfair, I have flown over the sea lots of times. I actually attacked an aircraft carrier once.

COMM Ah yes, I have the details of your 'attack' here. Mission nineteen. Let's see. Take off 0500 hours, proceeded to target area, nice start. Target spotted 0520 hours, good, climbed to a height of 6000ft, prepared for attack, went into a power dive, and successfully... landed on target.

PILOT I had to go wee wees sir. Caught short. But I took off immediately sir. Good job too - one of our lads crashed straight into it. Poor devil didn't stand a chance.

COMM What?

PILOT No sir - and that really go me upset, and I was going to let 'em have it - I was going to whip it straight out, fly low and lob it straight through the dining room porthole - that would have sorted them out.

COMM You were going to do what?

PILOT Cut it straight out and let 'em have it, whee splat right in the middle of breakfast. They'd have known we meant business then alright sir.

COMM What were you going to cut straight out and through into their breakfast?

PILOT My stomach sir. Oh yes, I'd like to see the expressions on their faces when the great squelchy mass plummeted right into...

COMM Wait...wait a moment, let me just get this clear in my mind. You were going to cut out...

PILOT My stomach, yes sir, kamikaze... (DOES HARA-KIRI GESTURE)

COMM You were going to cut out your stomach and... throw it a the enemy?

PILOT Yes sir, straight at them.

COMM Any particular reason?

PILOT Die for the Emperor sir.

COMM And what purpose would that serve?

PILOT Make the enemy feel guilty sir.

More than you want to know! - Mike Burkey

A father passing by his son's bedroom was astonished to see that the bed was nicely made and everything was picked up and in it's proper place. Then he saw an envelope propped prominently on the pillow. It was addressed to "DAD." With the worst premonition, he opened the envelope and read the letter, with trembling hands:

"Dear Dad,

It is with great regret and sorrow that I am writing you. I had to elope with my new girlfriend because I wanted to avoid a scene with Mom and you. I have been finding real passion with Stacy and she is so very nice to me. But I know you would not approve of her because of all her piercing's, tattoos, her tight motorcycle leather clothes and because she is so much older than I am. But please understand, it is not only the passion we share. . . . . Dad, she is pregnant!! Stacy said that we will be very happy together. She owns a trailer in the woods and has a stack of firewood for the whole winter. We share a dream of having many more children. Stacy has opened my eyes to the fact that marijuana doesn't really hurt anyone. We will be growing it for ourselves and trading it with the other people in the commune for all the cocaine and ecstasy we want. In the mean time, we will pray that science will find a cure for AIDS so Stacy can get better. She sure deserves it!!! Don't worry Dad, I know that I am only 15, but I know how to take care of myself. Someday, I am sure that we will be back to visit so you can get to know your grandchildren.

Love, Your Son,

John

P.S. Dad, none of the above is true. I am over at Tommy's house. I just wanted to remind you that there are worse things in life than the report card that is in my centre desk drawer. I love you!! Call me when it is safe for me to come home."

If god made humans in his image, does that mean he is also a weakling?

Nah, we just tell ourselves that to cover for the undeniable fact that we were scraped together at the end of the Creation project. And at that, using leftovers after the main project deliverable: implementing every imaginable variation on the the concept of "beetle".

And if that weren't enough to kick us in the anthropocentric nutes, it's clear we aren't even in the same league as termites, as measured by biomass or biodiversity. This caused some severe editing of the Creation story, particularly Genesis 1:25 - 1:31, which originally went something like this:

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, We have checked our deliverables and Creation is complete; so let there be Slack; and God saw the Slack, that it was good, and God separated the productive phase of the Project from the mindless consumption of excess Resources.

27 And the Slack was fruitful of all manner of Diversions of surplus Resources; so God said, Let Us celebrate; and the Celebration begat the Kegger, and the Kegger begat Beer, and Beer begat all manner of amusing indiscretions. And God saw that these where more or less Harmless.

28 Then God noticed that the Project had this left-over mud, and this He fashioned into a Man; but there was not enough fuel left over to fire the clay, so when Man was half-baked, He breathed upon Man and brought him to life.

29 Then Man opened his eyes, and looking on God asked, are You Me? And God said no. Then looking around, Man asked, Is all this for Me? And God said, No, you are only the half-baked leftovers, but if you study Creation perhaps you can become full-baked. And Man thought that this was Bad, and set out to Improve on Matters.

30 So Man said, let there be Self-Serving Sophistry, and let there be Willful Ignorance; and these were fruitful beyond all Measure, and so begat Religion, Conformism, Bigotry and every manner of Officious Narrow-Mindedness. And Man thought these were Good, and he wrote his version of Events down so that none would ever challenge Conformity without Fear.

31 And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good, except for the bits that came after the Beer which in retrospect looked somewhat Doubtful. And God, seeing that Slack had used up the Resources He needed to Fix the Problem, said, Let there be Muddling Through; Let there be Counting On Things Working Out in the End. And seeing that these were not Satisfactory and He was over budget anyway, God said, Let there be Hope. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
