THE MOST OVERRATED MOVIES OF 2002
Because no one pays me to see movies, I tend to avoid those I don’t think I’ll have much chance of liking.  As a result, my least favorite film of 2002 was “The Time Machine,” which, while certainly not a good movie, was not offensive and not an insult to cinema.  So instead of picking a worst movie of the year, I pick the Most Overrated Films, i.e., movies that have received more money, praise, or awards than they really deserve.

Which brings me to two of the highest grossing films of 2002.  One bored me at times but can’t really be called overrated because so few critics and awards seem to favor it.  The other was actually somewhat entertaining but unremarkable, ordinary, one-level, and vanilla—almost bordering on that critique known simply as “blah.”  I refer, of course, to “
Star Wars Episode II:  Attack of the Clones” and “Spider-man.”  Clunky, perfunctory storytelling robbed “Attack of the Clones” of the awe of its visual splendor, while the only plausible explanation for “Spider-man’s” enormous success was its willingness to be absolutely middle-of-the-road.
