(YF5) protecting ex-gays and gays

People who want to escape from homosexual addiction have many obstacles to overcome. One of these is the pressure by some homosexuals and lesbians to continue to engage in homosexual sex. Another is the discrimination by hommosexuals and lesbians. We had requested the opinion because the Fairfax County School Board was set to add sexual orientation to the public schools’ anti-discrimination regulations at the behest of gay activists. When we requested sexual reorientation also be added to the anti-discrimination regulations in order to protect ex-gays, the gay groups vehemently opposed our requests for equal protection of former homosexuals. ******* With a sexual orientation provision to protect their hate, gay activists can then claim ex-gays and their supporters discriminate against them because we advocate for a different view of homosexuality. Therefore, we had no choice but to seek the attorney general’s opinion letter. ******* To give sexual orientation protection to one group while excluding another is the worst form of discrimination. ******* Regina Griggs executive director, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays ******* PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays Box 561 Fort Belvoir VA 22060 703-360-2225 pfox.exgays@starpower.net http://www.pfox.org __________________________________ HOW CAN I SUPPORT PFOX? ******* Click on the link below to make a tax-deductible secure online credit card donation to Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays: http://www.pfox.org and click on the Donate button on the left side Or send your tax-deductible gift today to: PFOX, Box 561, Fort Belvoir VA 22060 ******* All donors will recieve a subscription to the PFOX Press Newsletter by mail. ******* TOPICA - Start your own email discussion group. I think that's demeaning, and that's then a real hot button because you can't have it both ways. ******* "We don't put your sexual orientation on employment applications, we hire you on qualifications, so why is it necessary to bring the bedroom into the workplace?" Griggs asked. ******* At a time when former homosexuals are facing increasing intolerance, presentations by former homosexuals are more important than ever, PFOX said in an e-mail directed to federal, state and county employees. Equal access to public facilities by former homosexuals supports diversity and tolerance, PFOX said. ******* Peter Sprigg, director of the Center for Marriage and Family Studies at the Family Research Council, said that federal, state and local agencies should not be in the business of sponsoring "gay pride" events or having diversity training that includes sexual orientation. ******* "The diversity training, unfortunately, is not very diverse because it always presents a pro-gay perspective, so maybe we could have a little more genuine diversity by bringing in the perspective of former homosexuals," Sprigg said. ******* Under pressure from homosexual activist groups, Attorney General John Ashcroft apparently reversed a decision not to allow U.S. Department of Justice employees to stage events marking "Gay Pride Month" at agency headquarters. ******* However, DOJ Pride, a homosexual activist group in the Justice Department, will have to fund its own event and have it on its own time, a DOJ spokesman said last week. DOJ Pride has scheduled a ceremony for Wednesday to honor activist lawyers Calls to DOJ Pride and to the Justice Department press office were not returned. ******* "Gay pride" events also are being held at the departments of Commerce, Transportation, Interior, USAID, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Library of Congress, the National Institutes of Health and the Office of the Comptroller. ******* Some homosexual advocacy groups agreed that either all groups should be recognized or none should. "Gay pride" should be honored along with Black History Month, Asian-American Heritage Month and others, they said. ******* "In a perfect Republican world, I think that government employees ought to just go to work," said Mark Mead, director of public affairs with the Log Cabin Republicans, a homosexual advocacy group within the GOP. ******* "I could argue both cases, that government facilities ought to be used for government purposes only. But since other people...have decided that they're going to honor these groups, rightly or wrongly, then our mantra has always been: 'We only want equal rights, not special rights.' ******* "So if a department were to say, 'We're not doing any of these for anyone,' whether I thought that was right or wrong, that would be fair," Mead said. ******* However, Dr. Bill Maier, a resident psychologist with Focus on the Family, said homosexuality should not be officially recognized in the same way that black and Asian Americans are recognized. Homosexuality is not an immutable characteristic, such as race or gender, he said. ******* Homosexual activist organizations want corporations, municipalities, state governments and the federal government to grant special rights to individuals based on their sexual behavior. ******* "They're effectively using misleading anti-discrimination language to argue for these special rights. But in fact, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that people who identify as homosexuals are not part of a protected minority class because of their sexual orientation," Maier said. ******* In order to qualify for a protected minority class, a group must exhibit three elements: immutable characteristics, such as race or gender; financial discrimination; and political weakness. In 1986, the Court found that homosexuals as a group did not meet these criteria because behavior or conduct is inconsequential in considering minority class status. ******* Homosexual advocacy groups tend to be well funded, politically connected and media savvy, Maier said. They also promulgate the position that homosexuality is genetic, or grounded in biology, which is disputed, even by "gay-friendly" researchers, he said. ******* "What ex-gays say distresses them most about the 'gay pride' month is that the nation's gay activist organizations refuse to tell the truth about homosexuality," Maier said. ******* PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays Box 561 Fort Belvoir VA 22060 703-360-2225 pfox.exgays@starpower.net http://www.pfox.org __________________________________ HOW CAN I SUPPORT PFOX? What would a common sense reading of Christianity look like? ******* Jesus did indeed associate with all kinds of persons, but He did not approve of all kinds of behavior. The whole of the Biblical message is built on the distinction between "who we are" and "what we do" -- two very different things. Jesus died to save all persons, not to preserve all behavior. ******* The law and grace of God defines our reason for existence. Jesus died because of our behavior contrary to our reason for existence, including sexual addiction, in order to free us from it, and restore us to our reason for being alive -- summed up in the law of love. ******* Homosexuality is a compulsive, lethal, addiction. Those engaged in the homosexual lifestyle lose somewhere between 30% to 40% of their lifespan off the normal American lifespan in the middle to high 70's. Acting out homosexual persons, on average, do not live much beyond their middle 40's. ******* When AIDS hit the news in the early 1980's, homosexual persons were warned, by those both in and out of "the lifestyle", that if they continued with their typical behavior, they would likely get AIDS and die. What would one expect from a behavior like anal intercourse? Health? ******* Their typical response was, "You are attacking who I am, not my behavior. Homosexuality is who I am." Trying to stop something you think is your identity feels like suicide, so it becomes compulsive. Homosexual persons continued the lethal behavior, and so continued to die. ******* Compulsive continuance of lethal behavior is clear evidence of a severe pathology. Common sense. That the American Psychological and Psychiatric Associations cannot stand up and affirm that tells us that they no longer have the health and welfare of homosexual persons at heart. ******* But Jesus does. There was no "gay rights" movement among the Jews, and Jesus did not start one. He loves us too much. ******* Yours truly, ******* Earle Fox ******* http://theRoadtoEmmaus.org - a school of Christian apologetics ******* PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays Box 561 Fort Belvoir VA 22060 703-360-2225 pfox.exgays@starpower.net http://www.pfox.org ******* __________________________________ HOW CAN I SUPPORT PFOX? ******* Click on the link below to make a tax-deductible secure online credit card donation to Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays: http://www.pfox.org and click on the Donate button on the left side ******* Or send your tax-deductible (USA only) gift today to: PFOX, Box 561, Fort Belvoir VA 22060 ******* All donors will receive a subscription to the PFOX Press Newsletter by mail. ==^================================================================ Or send an email to: PFOX-unsubscribe@topica.com ******* TOPICA - Start your own email discussion group. Answer the following multiple-choice question: Tolerance can best be defined as: ******* a. the acceptance of the differing views of other people and fairness toward the people who hold different views ******* b. active suppression of objectionable views in favor of other preferred ideas and opinions ******* The NEA bills itself as "the nation's largest professional employee organization, representing 2.7 million" school personnel. It also claims to be a most diverse and tolerant group. But is it? Last week (July 1-6, 2003), during its annual conference in New Orleans, the NEA was tested on the subjects of tolerance and diversity. Alas, it failed the test. ******* To be sure, the NEA is home to many causes - from pro-abortion views to gay activism. However, some views are not welcome in the NEA. For instance, support for sexual abstinence only programs is rarely heard in the NEA. Instead, it promotes school-based "health" clinics that would dispense all kinds of things, except perhaps the advice to remain sexually abstinent. ******* Perhaps lesser known is the rejection of any idea that youngsters confused about their sexuality should be exposed to a diversity of opinion concerning the flexibility of sexual orientation. The NEA is a signatory to the propaganda piece, "Just the Facts About Sexual Orientation." I say propaganda because the document gives the reader no idea that the views expressed are scientifically controversial and unsettled. This authoritative sounding piece rejects the possibility that sexuality might be changeable or that students experiencing same sex attraction have options other than identifying as gay, lesbian or bisexual. ******* Enter Sissy Jochmann and New Business Item 15. Jochmann is a second-grade teacher from Pennsylvania and chair of the Conservative Educators Caucus (www.ceccentral.org). In New Orleans last week, Jochmann gave the NEA a pop quiz on tolerance that seemed like a no-brainer. ******* She reasoned if the NEA is as committed to tolerance and diversity as the organization statements declare, then surely the assembled delegates would vote to include mention of ex-gays in literature and teacher training materials concerning sexuality. And further, she suggested that students be told about resources designed to assist those struggling with unwanted same sex attraction. ******* Certainly tolerance would dictate an affirmation of the lives and dignity of ex-gays and their chosen paths. ******* Right? ******* Not so at last week's convention. ******* Jochmann introduced a proposal that would have required the NEA to "include the term 'ex-gay' or 'those with unwanted same sex attraction' in all policies listing sexually diverse groups and offer unbiased information on resources for sexually confused youth." ******* Sadly for teachers and students that would have benefited from a more balanced view of sexual orientation, the assembly voted not to consider the item. Jochmann was surprised to learn that many of her colleagues had never heard of ex-gays. Perhaps, they had been reading "Just the Facts.." ******* Well, if the NEA material on sexuality was the study guide for Tolerance 101, it certainly didn't yield passing grades. Apparently, the delegates were fairly intolerant of the notion that children should be exposed to both sides of this controversial matter. Rather, many schools will continue to withhold unbiased information concerning the fluid nature of sexuality, especially during adolescence. ******* Is this simply an ideological issue? ******* While such issues are involved, the debate is also about what is best for children. Some research points to negative outcomes for teens prematurely labeling themselves as gay or lesbian. ******* Since nearly 26 percent of teens in one large survey were uncertain about their sexuality, but only about 3 to 4 percent of the adult population identifies as gay or lesbian, there is much room for such premature self-labeling. Leaving aside ideology, wouldn't children be better served by following the common sense of Jochmann's balanced proposal? ******* So how did you answer the definition of tolerance? If you said "b," then you understand tolerance NEA style. If you said "a," then you and the dictionary are on the same page. ******* Now class, what word is defined by letter "b?" ******* Warren Throckmorton is Director of College Counseling and an Associate Professor of Psychology at Grove City College. His research "Initial Empirical and Clinical Findings Concerning the Change Process for Ex-Gays," was published in the June 2002 issue of the American Psychological Association's publication Professional Psychology:Research and Practice. ********************************************************************************************************************** ******* item 5 NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION (NEA) LIKES THE BOY SCOUTS NOW ******* From: "Parents and Friends of Ex-gays (PFOX)" ******* Date: Sat, 2 Aug 2003 17:18:43 +0000 ******* FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE ******* Contact: Dr. Warren Throckmorton 724-458-3787 ******* August 1, 2003 ******* NEA Admits Discrimination Towards Ex-Gay Group ******* By Dr. Warren Throckmorton ******* Stop the presses! After weeks of silence, the NEA on Wednesday admitted discriminating against the Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays (PFOX). The nation's largest organization of educators acknowledged that they excluded PFOX from exhibiting at the 2002 and 2003 NEA conventions. ******* In response to a Cybercast News Service inquiry, Angetta McQueen of the NEA stated, "The National Educational Association is a private organization. We reserve the right to select exhibitors at our events." So when the NEA wrote to PFOX saying the exhibit hall was "sold out," it was like W.C Fields saying, "go away kid, you bother me." ******* Quick review: According to its website (www.pfox.org), PFOX is an organization that supports "the right of homosexuals and lesbians to choose change." They also provide information and resources to individuals and family members dealing with homosexuality. Contrary to the official position of the NEA, PFOX does not view sexual orientation as an inborn, unchanging trait. To present this alternative position to educators, PFOX applied for booth space at the 2002 and 2003 NEA conventions. They reasoned that fairness would be served by having both broad views represented. The NEA denied the PFOX request saying in a letter that the exhibit spaces were "sold out." However, PFOX learned that space was indeed available leading to the filing of a complaint with the District of Columbia Office of Human Rights. The Human Rights Office will decide within the month if the complaint will go forward. ******* What is astounding is the NEA's admission that they excluded PFOX on purpose. The irony is delicious. When the Supreme Court ruled that the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) could honor its mission and as a private organization exclude gay men, the NEA passed a resolution encouraging school boards to remove Scout troop meetings from school buildings. Wouldn't the irony be complete if the NEA used the BSA decision as a legal basis for excluding PFOX from the NEA's "private" convention? ******* If the NEA does stick with the "we're a private organization" defense, they still will have a problem that the BSA did not have. The BSA policies were very clear about the organization's historic stance concerning the incompatibility of homosexual behavior with the BSA mission. The NEA only behaves in an ex-homophobic manner; there is no such anti-ex-gay language in NEA's mission statement. In fact, the NEA trumpets its nondiscrimination positions toward a host of diverse groups. To be precise, the mission of the NEA is "to fulfill the promise of a democratic society, the National Education Association shall promote the cause of quality public education and advance the profession of education; expand the rights and further the interest of educational employees; and advocate human, civil, and economic rights for all." Well, for all but ex-gays it appears. ******* I learned in school that there are no stupid questions. So here are two: How does keeping information away from educators and by extension, America's school children, further the NEA mission? Is the NEA leadership afraid its members are unable to evaluate all sides of an issue without the information being screened? ******* Maybe its time to email, write or call and ask the NEA (www.nea.org) for some answers. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Warren Throckmorton is Director of College Counseling and an Associate Professor of Psychology at Grove City College. The attorneys are eager to find and to litigate on behalf of individual clients (or class actions on behalf of groups) a series of legal cases, anywhere within the U.S.A., to challenge the notion that people are born gay and, further, to gain access for our message that a healing strategy exists for those with unwanted same sex attractions. In each case, we need to show the harm caused and to identify an appropriate defendant(s). ******* To help provide some ideas for each of you to consider, the attorneys are looking for fact patterns where a patient's right to treatment may have been violated, or equal access for the "ex-gay" message has been denied, or tort cases where a physical or emotional harm occurred to a client because of the fraudulent message that people are born that way. ******* Some examples of such fact patterns may include: ******* · HMO Discrimination - client of therapist is denied insurance coverage for reparative therapy when same insurance company would cover gay affirmative therapy ******* · Emotional and Physical Harm - individual receives hepatitis C, HIV, or other ailments because school counselors, psychologists etc. provide message that they should engage in gay affirmative sex. (Of course, if someone died, their estate or legal guardians may be an appropriate plaintiff). ******* · Emotional and Physical Harm - Sue gay or porn magazines where message delivered about wonders of gay affirmative sex and an individual can be shown to have relied on such advice. ******* · Emotional and Physical Harm - person undergoes sex reassignment surgery because of gay affirmative messages and subsequently regrets such action because of later acquired knowledge that reparative healing strategy for gender identity deficit existed and this alternative was not provided or actively discouraged as an option to consider. ******* · Endangerment of Minors - cases where inner city at risk youth were improperly advised to engage in gay sex and suicide or lesser emotional and physicial harm occurred. ******* · Endangerment of Minors - Sex education classes where advice given that anal sex is safe for receptive partner as long as condom is in use and individual contracted any one of the innumerable illness which are directly proximate to such activity. ******* · Equal Access Denied - equal protection of the law cases where gay affirmative message is provided without corresponding gender affirming message being given equal time ******* · Endangerment of Minors - actions on behalf of children who are placed with two mommies or two daddies (or a single placement) when a mother and father placement was available. ******* · Undue Economic Burden - Where burden is placed on private business to provide domestic partnership benefits. ******* · Endangerment of Minors - Inappropriate mentoring (gay affirmative message) cases in Big Brother/Big Sister programs where specific harm to an individual occurred. ******* · Equal Access - Public School or other governmental environments where gender affirming process message is shut out and gay affirmative message is exclusively provided ******* The above are only illustrative examples. If someone has an idea for a case or an issue they feel may be appropriate, please do not hesitate to contact me, either by phone or email. Jeralee Smith, chair of the caucus, said the group wants to educate the NEA concerning the needs of ex-gay students and teachers. "We feel that this group can help educate the NEA concerning the existence of former homosexuals," Smith noted. Regarding NEA policies on sexual orientation, Ms. Lyons commented that the recognition of the Ex-Gay group does not mean that the NEA endorses the viewpoint of the caucus. Were it not for the help of others in this capacity, I truly believe I would not have overcome the deep depression and extreme mental illness I faced with my own sexual conflict. ******* What bothers me more is discovering the statement in the National Mental Health Association (NMHA) booklet - "What Does Gay Mean?" that states ...“…attempts to “cure” lesbians and gay men may help change sexual behavior temporarily but will also create emotional trauma.” ******* I have experienced change in my sexual orientation, identity, and attractions and receiving help to do so did NOT cause emotional trauma! I am offended by such a statement that would discriminate against respected leaders in this area, such as Dr. Warren Throckmorton, Dr. Robert Spitzer and others, whose research shows this is not true. My own life and that of thousands of others also proves otherwise. In fact, I experienced emotional trauma when after visiting mental health professionals, I was encouraged to embrace homosexuality as the only alternative. Those counselors were unwilling to explore the underlying issues that I felt were the real problem. Finding those who were willing to do so has allowed me to resolve my sexual conflict more than I ever thought possible. Having sex with someone of the same gender never would have brought about the recovery and ability to live a healthy, productive life that I experience today. ******* Is there documentation or research to back up the NMHA booklet's statement that such therapy causes emotional trauma? ******* I respect the rights of others who wish to embrace a homosexual identity and/or lifestyle, but I also ask that those of us who have found resolution otherwise be respected, instead of mocked by such ridiculous statements, or discriminated against when it comes to "promoting mental health, preventing mental disorders and achieving victory over mental illness through advocacy, education, research and service" that your organization strives to do. ******* In reading NMHA's mission statement, values and goals, I find nothing that P-FOX and other similar organizations would not adhere. I implore NMHA's to exercise it's own statement..."Justice demands that every person, regardless of disability and other characteristics such as race, ethnicity, gender, age, economic status or sexual orientation, has the right and responsibilities of full participation in society"... towards those of us who have also dealt with the complexities of sexuality, but not caved into the unfounded, politically correct notions that embracing homosexuality is the only way to resolve same-sex attractions. ******* Sincerely, Don Corne, Richmond, VA ******* PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays ******* Box 561, Fort Belvoir VA 22060 ******* 703-360-2225 ******* pfox_exgays@hotmail.com ******* www.pfox.org ******* To subscribe to this list, send a blank email to: PFOX-subscribe@topica.com ********************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 11 ONLINE DISCUSSION GROUP ******* Date: Tue, 21 Dec 2004 ******* From: "PFOX" ******* PFOX sponsors an e-mail discussion group at Yahoo Groups. Perhaps he was influenced by GLSEN's policy of encouraging public schools to censor ex-gay materials.” ******* “As result, Fairfax County public schools have promoted gay issues while censoring ex-gays,” Griggs explained. “For example, James Madison High School invited a homosexual to address students on ‘the rights of gay adoption.’ The speaker was formerly married with children but is now living with a man. He and his male companion could not have children together, so he told the students that gay couples should be allowed to adopt children,” Griggs said. “Yet the principal refused to grant equal access to an ex-gay speaker.” ******* “In addition, history students could get extra credit by attending PFLAG discussions, but PFOX was excluded,” Griggs continued. “The principal did not notify parents about these speakers so parents were unaware of what their children were being taught, and this topic was not reviewed by the Family Life Curriculum Advisory Council.” ******* Robert Rigby, Jr., a gay Fairfax County teacher and a director of the local GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) school clubs and GLSEN, participated in a picket with students against an ex-gay conference being held at a church. “The picketers used bullhorns to shout hateful remarks and carried an effigy of a nude woman,” said Griggs. “The teacher, who is also a coordinator of the Fairfax County Safe Schools Coalition, opposes our attempts to include ex-gay books and presentations in the school curriculum, although he endorses gay books and gay presentations.” ******* “The ex-gay community deserves tolerance and equal treatment,” Griggs said. “Fairfax County public schools should not promote some sexual groups (gays, bisexuals and transgenders) while discriminating against others (ex-gays). PFOX believes this is the first time ex-gay legislation has been introduced anywhere in the United States of America. ******* Although the ex-gay amendment was rejected by a vote of 15 - 28, it alerted the Maryland state senate to the intolerance ex-gays face in Maryland. For example, our PFOX ex-gay representative on the Family Life Committee of the Montgomery County Maryland Board of Education had her ex-gay materials rejected by the Committee. Instead, the Committee and the Montgomery County, Maryland Board of Education approved materials published by gay activist organizations as school resources, even though some of these gay materials contain hateful claims about ex-gays. This was not considered "hate speech" because the hate was directed against ex-gays and not against gays. ******* Last year PFOX's ex-gay billboard in Rockville Maryland was interpreted as "hate" against gays by lesbian protestors and Equality Maryland, a gay rights organization. ******* Magellan Health Service, based in Columbia Maryland, is the largest managed behavioral health care company in the nation. Last month, Magellan dismissed psychology professor Dr. Warren Throckmorton from its National Provider Advisory Council because of complaints from gay activists that he counsels individuals struggling with unwanted same sex attractions. ******* The Prince George's Sentinel, a Maryland newspaper, refuses to accept PFOX news releases because it considers ex-gay press releases to be "hate mail." ******* Linda Wall, a former lesbian, was equated to the "Taliban crashing into the Twin Towers" by a gay activist because she shared her coming out of the lifestyle story with a student who had testified before the Maryland State Board of Education that he was "gay." ******* Maryland ex-gay author Richard Cohen was accused of hate against homosexuals when he released his new book 'Coming Out Straight'. ******* The list is endless because every day brings new hostile acts against the ex-gay community under the justification of fighting "hate" against homosexuals. In this climate of intolerance against ex-gays due to their very existence, support for the ex-gay community is interpreted as bigotry against homosexuals. ******* Claims of hate based on sexual orientation should not be used to silence the ex-gay community and their supporters. Hunt that Fairfax County public schools should host ex-homosexual speakers ("Sex-ed battles raging in region," Page 1, Feb. 10). Our experience as ex-homosexual representatives shows that the schools have a history of discriminating against the ex-homosexual community. ******* Three years ago, then-Superintendent Daniel Domenech met with two homosexual groups to implement homosexual-themed presentations and materials throughout the schools. However, he refused to meet with ex-homosexual representatives. As a result, Fairfax County public schools have promoted homosexual issues while censoring former homosexuals. ******* For example, James Madison High School invited a homosexual to address students on homosexuals and adoption rights. The speaker was formerly married with children but now lives with a man. Because he and his male companion cannot have children together, he spoke about why he thinks they and other same-sex couples should be allowed to adopt children. Yet when we asked the principal to grant equal access to an ex-homosexual speaker, the principal refused. ******* In addition, history students had the opportunity to gain extra credit if they attended discussions held by a homosexual group, but our former-homosexual group was excluded. The principal did not give any parental notification of these speakers, so parents were unaware of what their children were being taught. Fairfax County schools should not promote some sexual groups (homosexuals, bisexuals and the transgendered) while discriminating against others (ex-homosexuals). We urge the School Board to allow ex-homosexual speakers and presentations immediately. ******* REGINA GRIGGS, Executive director, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays ******* A copy of this article is available online at: http://www.pfox.org/asp/newsman/templates/newstemplate.asp?articleid=201&zoneid=4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To subscribe to this list of ex-gay news and views, send a blank email to: Ex-Gays-subscribe@topica.com ********************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 20 JUDGE RULES IN FAVOUR OF EX-GAY GROUP ******* From: "PFOX" ******* Date Fri, 6 May 2005 ******* Contact: Regina Griggs, Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX) Executive Director, 703-360-2225, Richard Cohen, PFOX President, 301-805-6111 ******* Prohibits public schools from implementing anti-ex-gay curriculum ******* Montgomery County, Maryland – A United States District Court has granted the request of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX.org) for a temporary injunction prohibiting the Montgomery County, Maryland public schools from implementing an anti-ex-gay sex ed curriculum. ******* U.S. District Court Judge Alexander Williams, Jr. ruled that the curriculum threatened PFOX's constitutional rights, including the First Amendment freedom of speech. ******* In his opinion, Judge Williams noted some of the curriculum's biased statements against ex-gays, including statements claiming that `[t]rying to change one's sexual response to straight or gay is usually unsuccessful,' and that `[i]n fact, it is often societal homophobia that forces people to attempt to change.' ******* "These statements were approved as teacher resources by the Montgomery County, Maryland Board of Education and its Citizens Advisory Committee," said Regina Griggs, executive director of PFOX. ******* "The School Board can follow its own stated goal of diminishing sexual orientation discrimination by starting with the ex-gay community," said Griggs. "The School Board failed to include resources with positive portrayals of former homosexuals and, instead, approved resources that attempt to discredit their decisions and experiences. The ex-gay community must not be excluded or discriminated against in our schools." ******* PFOX and its co-plaintiff, Citizens for a Responsible Curriculum, are represented by Liberty Counsel. ### To subscribe to this list of ex-gay news and views, send a blank email to: Ex-Gays-subscribe@topica.com ********************************************************************************************************************* ******* item 21 EX-GAYS LOBBY WASHINGTON ******* Fri, 16 May 2003 ******* From: "Linda Harvey" ******* Contact: Regina Griggs at 703-360-2225, www.pfox.org, pfox.exgays@starpower.net ******* First Annual Ex-Gay Lobby Days on Capitol Hill a Success ******* Members of the ex-gay community and their supporters from across the country came to Capitol Hill today and yesterday for Ex-Gay Lobby Days sponsored by Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays (PFOX). PFOX is a national organization that supports families affected by homosexuality, educates the public on sexual reorientation, and advocates for the ex-gay community. ******* Ex-gays educated members of Congress on the adverse effect of sexual orientation legislation on former homosexuals. Of particular concern are laws regarding hate crimes and sexual orientation that are interpreted to make it illegal to promote alternatives to homosexuality. ******* Participants also related personal stories of the outright intolerance they experienced as ex-gays. They explained that former homosexuals are the only group systematically discriminated against on the basis of sexual orientation. For example, Larry Houston related how his employer, Harvard University, initiated two separate investigations against him simply because he "came out" as ex-gay on campus. The Congressional members appreciated the opportunity to meet with former homosexuals and discuss issues of concern to the ex-gay community. ******* Participating ex-gay organizations included: PFOX, Jews Offering New Alternatives to Homosexuality (JONAH), National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), Exodus, International Healing Foundation, Powerful Change, Evergreen, and One by One. Congressional lawmakers received a Statement of Principles on Alternatives to Homosexuality signed by all of the participating ex-gay organizations. The Statement called for the right of choice to leave the homosexual lifestyle, public awareness of alternatives to same sex attractions, client self-determination in the counseling field, ex-gay equal access to public forums, and tolerance for the ex-gay community. Congressional lawmakers also received a PFOX Fact Sheet detailing the scientific basis for sexual reorientation. ******* "Members of Congress and their legislative aides were introduced to the ex-gay community," said Regina Griggs, executive director of PFOX. "It was a fruitful experience for both. Also, parents of children in the lifestyle explained how they love their homosexual children unconditionally. Other groups insist that parents love their children only on the condition that parents affirm the child's homosexual lifestyle. PFOX believes that parents should love their children unconditionally and without any stipulations." ******* PFOX is urging its members and allies to make appointments with their local Congressional offices to continue lobbying efforts for the ex-gay community. PFOX can supply participants with information packets to present to their local offices. ### PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays, Box 561, Fort Belvoir VA 22060, phone 703-360-2225, pfox.exgays@starpower.net, http://www.pfox.org ********************************************************************************************************* ******* item 22 EX-GAY BILLBOARD VANDALIZED - Billboard With Ex-Gay Message is Vandalized ******* From: "PFOX" ******* Date: Thu, 30 Sep 2004 ******* Contact: Regina Griggs at 703-360-2225; Executive Director of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays; ex-gays@earthlink.net ******* RICHMOND, Va. Sept 29, 2004 -- At a time when homosexual activists are seeking rights such as “gay marriage,” hate crime laws, adopting children and promoting homosexuality in schools, they are also attacking the freedoms of the ex-gay community. Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays Seeking Tolerance For All.” ******* The billboard purchased by the group Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays and Gays, PFOX, has now been defaced with red paint. ******* “We put up this billboard so that people will know the truth – that you don’t have to be homosexual if you don’t want to be. We’re hoping this ad will bring about public awareness, respect and tolerance. ******* "The vandalism of our billboard is another example of the intolerance ex-gays often face. We pray for those who tried to suppress our message, and we are as determined as ever to support the right of self-determination for those who seek help for unwanted same sex attractions. ******* "We see from this attack, and numerous hateful emails we have received from gay activists, that our message is clear, but unsettling," -- Regina Griggs, Executive Director, PFOX ******* Photo of the vandalized billboard is available online at http://www.earnedmedia.org/pfox.htm Click on photo for a high-resolution version ******* Previous press release on this billboard is available online at http://www.pfox.org/asp/newsman/templates/newstemplate.asp?articleid=144&zoneid=7 ******* To interview Regina Griggs, Executive Director of PFOX, call 703-360-2225 www.pfox.org # # # PFOX -- Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays, Box 561, Fort Belvoir VA 22060, 703-360-2225, pfox_exgays@hotmail.com, www.pfox.org - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - To subscribe to this list of ex-gay news and views, send a blank email to: PFOX-subscribe@topica.com *********************************************************************************************************
