Arthritis
I am not a vet, not even close.  I just happened to take in a dog who has a lot of arthritis.  Now I am researching and looking for ways to keep him as comfortable as possible without breaking the bank account (which is usually quite anemic).  On this page, I have put some links to some of the information I have found so far on arthritis.  I have included some different treatment options in the links for you to look at as well as some articles on what canine osteoarthritis actually is.

Our surgeon suggested Adequan shots and maybe something like MSM, as well as finding a good level of activity where Magnum is using the leg and building the muscle but is not overdoing it and making himself sore.  Our progress will be kept in his rehab pages.  If you have tried something that has worked well for your pet, please
email me, I am always interested in what works for others.

Just a note here to say that I am not endorsing any of these products.  This is just what I have found in my search for something to help Magnum with his arthritis.  I have just started my research for him and haven't tried many of these products yet.  If YOU have tried any of them and have had good results, by all means, email me and let me know.  If I try any of these products, I will put the results in the Living with Arthritis section.

My only word of caution to you would be on the Rimadyl.  I have heard a lot of negative things about it.  I am not one to go around spreading fear about different products but I would just say be careful.  Have your vet run liver function tests before starting on it and do some research on it first.  It seems that Labs are affected more adversely by this drug than other dogs.

Along with finding a good comfort level for your dog with arthritis, I believe you need to find a good vet.  One that you can feel like you are a partner with in treating your dog over the long haul with this disease.  This is something that will be a lifelong battle and, hopefully, Magnum has a lot of life left in him.  Finding a good vet is, in my opinion, essential.

I have started a group on yahoogroups for people who have furkids with arthritis.  Feel free to join.  It's designed to discuss the ups and downs of living with a pet with arthritis as well as different treatment options, supplments, ect, anything that has to do with helping our furkids be as painfree and active as we can help them be.  Click
here to join.

Maybe people have sworn by acupucture for their pets.  We haven't tried it yet.
