The following is a list of things that people have seen in their dogs while going through TPLO recovery. They are divided into things that were considered, by their vets, to be normal and things that were a cause for concern or a call to the vet. If you are uncomfortable with the way your dog is acting, however, call. Your peace of mind is worth much. This is only a list of other's experiences. We are not vets or medical people. |
What's Normal? |
Blood around staples Strike through bleeding (comes through the bandages) Swelling at ankles Leg jerks and muscle spasms Leg muscle "ticking" fluid buildup at knee around Day 6 Shaky leg Rashes and itching Hot spots Leaking wounds Does lie on TPLO leg or won't lie on TPLO leg (both are normal) Pocket of fluid along incision line Aversion to the sling Aversion to the ramps Sneaking onto beds, stairs and other places they don't belong :-) Having trouble peeing and wanting to "hold it" Not pooping for the first 2 or 3 days Panting, whining and restlessnes. Some panting, whining and restlessness may be normal at first but excessive panting, whining and restlessness could be signs that the dog needs more pain medication or that he is in distress and there is something wrong with the leg. You have to guage what is normal for your dog. |
What's Not Normal |
Blood in Urine Infections of any kind Sustained swelling and tenderness Refusal to put weight on the leg after several weeks Fever |
