Survey Of 2nd Timothy
INTRODUCTION TO 2nd TIMOTHY:
This is the last letter the Apostle wrote. The books of the New Testament are not arranged in chronological order. Paul is writing from a Roman dungeon, bound with chains and heavily guarded... his punishment for preaching the Gospel for nearly 30 years! (See 2:8-9)
1. In this letter the great apostle seems to be writing from a sense of deep loneliness, craving human sympathy and understanding love as he anticipated his death.
2. He is also writing to encourage his "son in the faith" to ENDURE the work of the ministry. Paul knew the temptation to quit was an ever-present reality in the ministry (2:10).
3. This letter demonstrates the necessity of CHRISTIAN COURAGE in the lives of church members. Every Christian should learn to:
a. SUFFER HARDSHIP 1:8; 2:3; 4:5
b. BE FEARLESS 1:7-8
c. NOT BE ASHAMED 1:8-12
d. PREACH BOLDLY 4:1-2
4. The old battle-scarred hero of the cross is PASSING THE TORCH as he prepares to lay down his life, and challenges Timothy to be a GOOD SOLDIER OF THE CROSS (4:1-8).
5. We can learn many mature lessons from this little letter to Timothy. We, too, must learn to be strong in the grace of our LORD (2:1-5).
