| SUMMARY The Fellowship of the Ring is the starting point in the trilogy and it is when the audience are first introduced to the main characters and their task. It begins in The Shire, a beautiful place in Middle Earth where the Hobbits live. The audience meet Frodo, and his Uncle Bilbo who has a magic ring. On Bilbo's 111th birthday he dissapears infront of hundreds of Hobbits and he leaves the Shire, leaving Frodo everything he owns, including the magic ring. Frodo keeps the ring for a long time without any fuss but one day he is visited by the wizard Gandalf the Grey who reveals that this ring is the one ring of power, forged by Lord Sauron and used for evil, and that it must be destroyed. He tells Frodo to take the ring to the man village of Bree, and that he will meet him there. He appoints another Hobbit, Samwise Gamgee to aid Frodo. On their way to Bree they ar chased by Ringwraiths and meet two other Hobbits, Pippin and Merry, who now join them on their journey. They reach Bree and cannot find Gandalf as he has been tricked by his head wizard, Saruman, and is currently being tortured. The Hobbits meet a ranger known as Strider (Aragorn) and he rescues them from the Ringwraiths. He tells them they must go to Rivendell, and he will accompany them there. They set off and spend one night at Weathertop, where they are again attacked by Ringwraiths and Frodo is stabbed by one. He begins to pass into the shadow world and become one so they travel quicker to Rivendell, in hopes that the Elves can save Frodo. When it seems that Frodo is lost, an Elf arrives called Arwen and she takes Frodo and rides to Rivendell as quickly as possible to save him. They are chased by Ringwraiths and she manages to get to Rivendell in time to save Frodo. In Rivendell Frodo, Aragorn and the other Hobbits are reunited and they meet Gandalf, who managed to escape Saruman. There is a council with other habitants of Middle Earth and it is decided that the Ring must be taken to Mordor and be destroyed. Frodo is named the Ringbearer and is accompanied by Gandalf (wizard), Aragorn, Pippin, Sam, Merry (three Hobbits), Boromir (a man), Gimli (a dwarf) and Legolas (an Elf). The Nine go through many trials, across a mountain, through the mines of Moria - where Gandalf is lost to the shadows and into the Realm of Lothlorien where they meet the Elf, Lady Galadriel. At the end of the film they are attacked by Orcs and Boromir is killed. Pippin and Merry are kidnapped by Orcs, Frodo and Sam have split from the others and left for Mordor and Aragorn, Gimli and Legolas have gone to save Pippin and Merry. The last scene in the movie is Frodo and Sam getting to the top of a hill and seeing Mordor for the first time. |
