We first meet Kyou in the end of the first episode. He jumps down (practically through the ceiling) and challenges Yuki to a fight. But they end up tripping and falling into Tohru's arms (thus changing into their animal forms). Kyou is basically the reason for Tohru finding out about the "Family Secret." (Without Kyou this whole lovely series could not have exsisted!) The reason why Kyou always wants to fight Yuki is because he blames Yuki for him not being part of the Jyuuishi. The mouse tricked the cat in the Original story. No one accepted him in his earlier age because he was the cat, mainly his mother. Like others in the Souma family his mother was a little overprotected and later on he seemed to get neglected (ie Momiji and his mother). He seems cold hearted and always angry, especially towards Tohru but she brings out a light in him. Helps him through to the very end even in his darker stages, she never gives up her up beat attitude. This kind of shocks Kyou sometimes.

His Relationship with Others...

Kagara Souma: She is the pig of the Jyuuishi. She loves Kyou a little too much some might say. She's always beating him up and then turning around acting hurt and broken hearted. She can be a little crazy in love over Kyou. When they were children she asked him to marry her and he said yes, but only because she was holding a big rock above her head. Later on we see a lighter side to her.

Yuki Souma: The mouse of the Jyuuishi. Now Kyou and Yuki don't really seem to get along. But it's also funny because they admire one another. Yuki admires Kyou because he seems to attract other people even with his sour attitude. Kyou admires Yuki for being loved by the Souma family so much.

Kazuma: We could say raised Kyou. He taught him how to fight. His grandfather also had the curse of the cat that Kyou has.

Tohru Honda: Now Kyou thinks that Tohru can be dull and somewhat of a pushover. Then again she brings out a nicer side of him too. When Tohru was sick, he went and made her some kind of leak soup so she would get better and we all know how much Kyou hates leaks. He also (kind of) protected her from these guys at school, he scared them away. In the end she also accepted Kyou for what he really is...
