She’s happy. She’s genki. She’s the all around good girl. You guessed it, she’s Tohru, the main character. This girl is almost to good to be true. She loves to clean and cook for people, and she’s always worried about the welfare of others, even when it comes to neglecting herself to do so. She’s also extremely bound to her word. She promised her mother, that she would make it though high school. Which doesn’t seem to hard, but when Tohru’s mother dies in a car crash, she has to go live with her grandfather, who is living off his savings. Rather then use her grandfather’s money to pay her way, she goes off, and sets up a little tent to live in, and gets a part time job that where she cleans for someone after school. And on top of that, when she comes back to her camp, it’s right into her homework, even if she is so tired, she can’t even see straight.

In fact, overworking is the reason she comes into the Sohma’s house. One day, after school, she stumbles into her tent, with a fever, not paying any attention to the fact that Yuki and Shigure are walking by and see a tent. Well anyway, she surfaces from her tent, to go get a rag wet in the lake, to cool her fever, while Shigure and Yuki are right there. They go back to the Sohma house and Tohru explains to them why she's living in a tent. It's goes on from there and she ends up staying with them. Thus the beginning of Fruits Basket.
