We made the Stars & Stripes Thursday, June 21, 2001! Here's the url/website address for you: http://ww2.pstripes.osd.mil/01/jun01/ed062101h.html Also, there was a brief in Naples' Il Mattino. Chantelle will translate the article and we'll forward the translation to everyone soon. We are just getting back from our extended vacations. Will followup soon. Joyce Loer Jones '71 (m-jones11@airmail.net), Chantelle Hilliard Kiphuth '71 (Chanteli@aol.com) and Page Holbook '65 (Pholbrook@aol.com) m-jones11@airmail.net 7/01

Hi! yup-there was a pool at Carney Park! It was to the left once you got into the park. Donna Porter's dad ran it for a while and then my mom did until we left in June 1977. I taught swimming there and subbed as a lifeguard. I got together with Tim and Linda Bradbury while they were in in South Florida recently and we had a blast. It would be great if alot of you guys would come down for the reunion Michelle DiMaria is planning for next Memorial Day weekend. katie janulis villani 78 7/01
Got back from that wonderful life changing experience. The Napoli 2001 reunion was Thanks so much to Joyce,Chantelle and Page who have given us all the greatest of all gifts. From the class of 1970 (I hope some of you can put pictures from the Tuesday formal dinner (the one time I didn't bring my camara). Would love to hear from anyone who attend FSHS from 1966-1970. Dean DeFino dxdefino@salisbury.edu 7/01
Hey let's put this Carney Park Swimming Pool thing to rest. As Keeper of the Gate, during the summer of 1974, I think that I am safe in saying that "THERE WAS A SWIMMING POOL THERE IN THE SUMMER OF 74". My weekend job, from 7AM til 4 pm during that summer was an arduous job. Checking cars for U.S. stickers and AFI plates on the bumpers, and ID cards of the auto's inhabitants was grueling work for a high school senior (but hey, someone had to do it). Granted there was the occasional nap I may have stole beneath my Ray Ban shades, or maybe Murph or Keller or Slate or Altieri or Mac Caruso may have stopped by to hash over something or other and maybe I occasionally neglected my duties during said discussions of epic proportions, regarding such topics as the discrepencies between the Greek and Roman names of the Mythological Dieties, or the importance of understanding the Quadratic Equation and its application to daily living. I do remember once awaking from a cat nap, after hashing over said something-or-other with one of the above-mentioned ner-do-gooders and seeing a dozen or so Fiat Cinquecentos with no U.S. stickers on the bumper parked at various places throughout the park. Approximately 7 or 8 Marlborough smoking, locals had piled out of each one and proceeded to the snack bar in search of the Holy Grail, un HAMBOURGESE CON MAYONAISE E' un COCA COLA. GRAZIE, I mean thanka you. I never got in trouble for the mass immigration that occurred that day and often wondered if it was maybe just some sort of hallucination, what with being under the hot Mediterranean sun all day and with arguing such topics of grandiose importance with my friends all afternoon and not consuming adequate quantities of water. I do remember (distinctly) deciding that I needed to clear my head and cool off, and so I walked over to THE POOL, behind the men's softball field, and dove into THE WATER, took a few laps and headed back to work. In fact, I worked a double that day and checked cars as they entered for the DRIVE-IN movie that night. Carey Tibbets, and anyone else who believes that there was no pool at Carney Park, I have to ask you, Are you sure you went to CARNEY PARK?, the big crater in Pozzuoli? with all the baseball fields and the football fields and the tennis courts and the snack bar (with Johnny the cook) and the picnic tables and barbeque pits and the GOLF COURSE and the skeet range and the handball court and the basketball court and THE SWIMMING POOL. (Someone back me up on this one) I may very well have concocted the entire place up in my mind. I mean, who would believe me if I told them that such a place actually existed? Maybe there was no pool there in 74. Maybe there was no Carney Park. No baseball, no football. Maybe I dreamt the whole thing, maybe it was all just a really good dream. Well maybe...just maybe...
Kevin Fetzer 74 07/01
I'm back again to make a public apology. I had thought I remembered a pool being built where the drive-in theater had been, but I let another old class mate convince me that I was crazy (go figure).Tracy Herman-Weathers was nice enough to take the time to remind me. She was a life guard there! By the way, Tracy and I lived across the street from each other in Hawaii in grade school and again in Naples :-)Small world! Thanks Tracy. Carey.

Yes, there was a pool at Carney Park! I lived at the pool the summer of '74, and some friends taught me how to do a flip off the board that summer. I also used to watch Steve Kern and Charlie Emich do some cool things off the high dive, although one day Charlie hit her head on the high dive doing a cutaway or some such thing. Does anyone know the whereabouts of Steve Kern? He was my next door neighbor in Parco Cuma and a good friend. Amy(Smith)Patterson '78 hparena@earthlink.net

Hi everyone, this is Dan Conlon again. Carey, you let me down and I shall not forget this. Thanks to Kevin Fetzer's dagger to the heart I am forced to concede that there was a pool at Carney Park in 1974. . . but NO WAY a pool at Carney Park in 1973! Mary you want to go double or nothing on this bet? 07/01
Dan..I hate to disagree with you..BUT...Carney Park did have a pool in '73. I do believe that the spring/summer of '73 was the first year it was open. Thanks for posting the pics of the reunion. Kevin may have let most of the Non-DOD stickered cars in during his "nap"...but he is correct in his "vision" of a pool there. Take care all!!

Thank you all for sharing such descriptive memories of the reunion for all of us that could not attend. I have been back to Italy a couple of times and already had a vacation planned over there this fall so going twice was not an option. On another note, I have yearbooks from 74 to 77 and was thinking of scanning them to a webpage. If there are any folks out there in careers or unorthodox occupations that would not like their yearbook photos posted, heads up and post a note please. You can send an email to wertrvlnuts@yahoo.com. Marylou Benner class of 77, student of FSHS 74 to 77. Gaeta is still the place.

Buon Giorno. Jen Portis here. I arrived in the middle of the Napoli reunion and had a great time - thanks to Joyce, Page and Chantelle (and locals Ed Ryan, etc.) for setting up a great tour of the area! The meal in the ruins at Pompeii was like a wedding feast. Had fun getting reacquainted, train ride to Sorrento, speaking Italian to resolve my blocked visa, chasing down Mary in gold alley, looking for the pagliacchio playing flute for JP- doesn't exist, swimming at The Pool... only heard about Dan Conlon running into a tree with the vespa on Capri - any pictures? (okay Dan, you have blackmail photos, but Connie is in them too). Have a great 4th! Wonder if they're having fireworks there now.

Dan - we left in 1973 and I remember the pool at Carney Park. The trip to Naples was a once in a lifetime experience that I will always treasure. Thank you to everyone that work so hard to give us this wonderful opportunity. Thank you Paul and Link for picking us up at the train station, Mary, Jennifer, JP, Dan, Dan, Buddy and LouAnne for the wonderful company and creating new memories. Kevin, we made it to Capo Mesino and though the foliage is larger everything was still the same. Cheryl Liby Sudol chlsudol@aol.com 07/01
Okay, okay! I guess if I'm going to run with the big boys, I better learn to take it like a man! Apparently, I spent far to much time myself at Carney Park napping and hashing over current world events (remember Nixon? The Vietnam police action?)I've been flooded with wonderful memories since reading Kevin's essay though, and for that you have my deepest gratitude! Great new fresh look for your web site Dan! Carey. 7/01

True story about Mrs. Regina Woods (Italian teacher.) After attending Mrs. Woods class for an entire year I was surprised that she did not post my grade at the end of the year. When I asked her why I had no grade she informed me that she could not find my name in the school system therefore she could give me no grade. I showed her my report card and showed her how my name was spelled (Scott White.) Mrs. Woods got angry with me and said that my name is VHITE SHCOTT (that is exactly what she called me all year) so I had to give her proof that my name really was Scott White in order to get credit for taking Italian. I heard that Regina was at the Italy reunion and I am very sorry that I did not get to see her and thank her for putting up with my crap back in 74-75. I was 2nd "banana" sitting next to Harry Meikle in the class. Thank god Harry was there because Regina "ripped" on him more than me! For whatever it is worth, Regina, I now do business with a company in Milano and my broken Italian (Napolitan) still comes in handy. Just like algebra, whoever thought we would actually use this stuff later in life. Scott 76 07/01
Buon giorno tutti ragazzi (sp?). Alex DeTonnancourt here again. YES THERE WAS A POOL at Carney Park in 1973 and probably in 1972 also! My older sister, Leslie worked there during most summers along with Matt Oswald and I forget who else...Kevin is right. Isn't Carney Park still there? I had my first summer job there the summer of 1972 working as a kids "camp counselor" and Tom Stubblefield was the coordinator Barbara Burchett was also one I think. The golf course had a snack bar that had the worlds best calzone pizzas. I spent lots of time in Carney Park...ran cross country there between football games. I lived off Via Possillipo and remember riding my bicycle all the way there because my parents wouldn't give me a ride out. By the way....I went to 8th grade in North Kingstown, Rhode Island with Bethe Mounce and I was in college with Patty Phelps in West Virginia! (Was in the same class as Frances McDromand of "Fargo", my claim to fame-- we were even buds! !). By the way...does EVERYONE know I have a newborn baby named ROCKY he's 5 months old now and I'm 44. My other son is 18. Just proud of myself...and wanted to stress WE ARE NOT OLD.

Hey all, Jim Steele '77 here....Whatsa matta you??? you donna remember the pool at Carney Park?? I sure remember that place! I spent a lot of summer days riding my 10-speed from out past Pinetamare down to Carney Park from '74 through '76. It sure was fun goofing around and trying to show off on the high dive--one of the few athletic talents I had at the time! Couldn't tell you who all was life-guarding then, except for Debbie Graveson. Man, did I have a crush on her and her sister Cindy!!! I remember hanging out at the pool (mostly on the diving boards), playing a little tennis, and then having to ride back home all wiped out. Anyone remember being there for the bicentennial? I think that was one of the last weekends I spent there before coming stateside. Man, all of those red, white, and blue clothes (remember the tall tube socks???) Oh yes, and then how about the prom in Pozzuoli and the after-prom trip to Ischia on the landing craft in '76?? Great m! emories! Hey, anybody who is interested, drop me a line and say hey! I'm planning on being at the reunion in Ft. Lauderdale next Memorial day--ya'll be there too, ok?

ok y'all, jp menese here, ....not to beat a dead Wildcat but........about that Carney Park pool....I left in the summer of 1972 and I know for a fact that..............there was...... A BIG HOLE in the ground that was going to be the new pool..... So what if that doesn't prove a thing, I just wanted to have something to say about the !@#$%&@*ing pool!!! Sure miss that fabulous 11 days over there. It went by so fast, but we sure packed in quite a bit in such a short time thanks to the "committee". Hopefully Joyce,Chantelle, Page and Ed Ryan, aren't tired of hearing thanks for everything. Other thanks to the "Web Guys", Dan,Scott, and others I am sure I am missing. Speaking of missing, it's no secret how much I missed having Kevin Fetzer there, but he got a daily report so he was kept up to date on all the happenings and various behavioral incidents. Many others were missed and who knows, maybe one day we can do it again....(in wheelchairs). Before I forget, some of my current Georgia neighbors and others didn't have the chance to exchange addresses, so anyone that wants to contact me, please feel free to do so and we can finish the "discussions" that we started, but always seemed to be interrupted by some wonderful distraction, like my pizza and Nastro Azzuro showing up, or some view of Vesuvio that could not be ignored. Who knows maybe even a crisis with one of the Cartee Clan. Kids missing in Pompeii, etc.....or possibly someone needing to hang their head overboard on the "gentle" ride to Capri. Ahhh, the fun things we shall remember.... Stewart Williams --the "trooper" award for going the whole time without his baggage and never seeming to be distressed. An example that I sure could learn from, because if it were me, there would have been an international incident with that airline... to seeing Gerry Devito.. a real treat for me to tell him how my typing paid the rent until I became a wealthy actor.... to Paul and Melissa LeBlue for taking another ride up Manzoni, so Louie and I could see Forrest Sherman. to Tom and Kathy Ross for introducing us to Fortunato and Tony so that we had a friendly hangout with great food, and a lovely last night there with Louie, Jennifer. to the great day at Carney Park, (for the younger alumni, that showed up)...shooting a few hoops, hitting the "general store", seeing the Crater Cantina, (ugh)....Snack Bar seems to have more of a nostalgic feel to it..... our "escorted" march across Afsouth to BLDG L, and the feel of some 30 years came flooding back.... our terrific bus driver from Afsouth who physically "moved" a car blocking passage back to the hotel.. and special thanks to Louie for his support with my special "mission" to Vesuvio... it's not possible to mention everyone or fair to take up any more space, but please know that everyone of you has a special place in my memory of that week. I think this is long enough, don't you Dan?. Needless to say, it was a week of incredible nostalgia and memories. I felt I had tears in my eyes the whole time because I was so moved. I will admit this now,...when my first pizza marguerita showed up, I literally had tears in my eyes. I couldn't believe I had finally returned after 23 years since my last visit, and was sitting in Napoli with this perfect pizza in front of me. I was fortunate enough to spend time with a lot of you, so you all know who you are and I thank you for the kind words and the great time we spent. (Joyce, they really are good boys!!!) It was my pleasure to have met all your families and enjoyed watching them experience Napoli. It certainly looks as if all your lives are going well, and that you have all "grown up" to be good human beings. A relief when you think about how some of you were back then.....no names of course Dale.....heh, heh. Hey, Regina Woods says she remembered me as a "piccolo diablo". I don't even remember taking her class.... I have some pics that Philippe Mondelin has graciously offered to post for me, so I will try to get them to him as soon as possible. I also am sending copies to everyone that was in a picture, so hopefully you will understand that it may take a little time to get to everyone. There is only one drawback,,,,on most of them I am in the picture as well. I was of the same opinion as Joyce, that a bunch of pictures of buildings and mountains would be better served to have someone in it. So, I somehow ended up in most of them, (big surprise, huh?) but not to worry, there are a lot of Louie Cartee as well. (he's the only guy that would hang around me, poor slob). Anyway, my best to you all, until we meet again.

Napol 2001 Reunion. Best vacation I've ever had. Period. Thank you Joyce, Paige & Chantelle for the opportunity to give my family a taste of the Italian life we all loved as kids. Like most of you I've been to so many schools that they all seem a blur. Forrest Sherman was different. I remember those Years (69-72) like they were yesterday except for maybe the Carney Park pool which wasn't there when I left in '72. The bond we all shared is not a myth. Everyone I met was like a long lost brother or sister. Tom Ross, Carney Park brought back memories of us butting heads in Pop Warner football. Thanks for the kind words, I'm proud to see you've turned out to be a fine teacher. Also enjoyed our 10 mile hike through Pozzouli to Solfatara. JP, thanks for your help in looking for the "lost boys" of Pompeii. It was great hanging out with you at Pompeii, Vesuvius, Capri, the hotel bar, Rome. My only regret is that time went by so fast. You're in so many of my pictures that I'm going to claim you on my taxes as a family member.Hopefully, you and Kevin and I can hook up in the future. Cheryl, you're just how I remember you, which is a good thing. Say hi to Gus for me. Loved meeting the Davenport girls. Carolyn, bring your Yankee self down to South Carolina and I'll show you where the Civil War started plus the first submarine in history. Built by Confederates of course. Man, I feel like I'm writing a book, if you want to know what really happened at the reunion, ie affairs, barroom brawls, etc. email me for the real dirt. Louie "Buddy" Cartee, Class of '74

Just wanted to say the pictures are terrific, Dan, and that the Reunion was wonderful. I had such a wonderful time, and I am sorry I haven't made it to previous reunions -- I'll sure try for them in the future. JP, did you tell Dan Portis what I told you to tell him yet??? Don't forget. To all of you who were on the trip, thanks for the memories and until we meet again...Claudia Davenport, class of 73 (well, I would have been anyway and should have been, but that's another story!) One last thing: anyone know where Charlie Edwards or Fabian Pina are these days (both class of '71 -- my brother Mark is looking for them).

Curt Hingson (FSHS class of 65) Interested in one more impression of Napoli 2001 Reunion? If so, here you go: Great weather, fine accomodations, a cleaner and more colorful Napoli, streets full of BMWs, Mercedes Benzs, Audis, Alpha Romeos, Smarty Cars, Vespas, and yes cincuecentos, brilliant caprian trellis flowers, fantastic bottled bevereges, delicious light pastas and pastries taken "al fresco" (at least 3 times daily), a comfortable schedule (thanks to the three coordinators), affordable mediterranean pottery ("we ship anywhere"), divinely inspired Limoncello (Liquori di Limoni), and an atmosphere of brotherhood amongst thw attendees which made it possible for all to instantly connect, no matter how long the separation. Here's to a great experience, renewed acquaintances, and a personal highlight of the year for me! Kudos to Page, Joyce, and Shantelle.

Hi all, this is Josie Waller, class of 74. Dan, I've got to thank you for the great pictures of the reunion. All of those who went to the reunion have written so much and I have now seen so many pictures that I feel I was there with you all. Would have liked to have gone along, but felt guilty going by myself when I knew the entire family would like to come along, so didn't do it for myself. Oh well!! For those of you who did go, please keep the messages coming. My brother, Stewart, was also in Naples in June with his family and says that the Bagnoli steel mill is no longer a steel mill but kind of a marina! He also tried to go down to the cove, but said that it is now closed off. Did anyone else try to go to the cove, a great place to skip school since it was right on Posilipo? Evidently, much work to clean up that area has been done, and it is now kind of a ritzy area. This is getting too long, but again thank you all for the memories, keep them coming! Jo

Thanks so much for posting these pics. Even though I went to FSHS from 1968-1970 and would have graduated in '71 I still recognized the sights. Every day you guys were there I was with you in spirit. Melody Gore Dodd melodydodd@hotmail.com 07/01
I'm back from the trip from the homecoming in Wichita. It was very hot and dry. The temperature were ranging around 100 to 105 degree for the weekend. Most of the younger classmate in 80's were there and me Big Rog the legend of the late 70'. The amount of schools being represented was about 500. Then there were teachers from the DoDDS having there reunuion also. There were trail walks everyday and at night they had karaoke at the bar. While on the trail walk we went to see the area, where the ground breaking ceremonies that would take place on saturday afternoon in the heat. Friday and Saturday night there were nice meals and music to dance and socialized afterward. This year Frankfurt high did not win the most people event. This time it was Berlin High. Saturday night dinner we celebrate Glen Galo birthday. One of our old teacher that show up was Gerry DeVito the drama teacher. I was telling some students about the upcoming reunion that are plan for Vegas in October and one for memorial weekend for next year. Dan if you want pictures form the Homecoming in Wichita e-mail Belina Barrett HB5901@aol.com. "This is The Baddest Dude" signing off. Big Rog RoJo1erols.com 07/01
Thank-you for all of the wonderful photos and memories of your reunion home to Naples. I wish I could have been there. I had tears and floods of nostalgia when I read your stories of your trip and saw the photographs. Please post a photo of Signora Regina Woods! How about doing a biography of her in honor of her for the archives in Wichita, Kansas? Anyone planning another reunion in Naples in another five or so years? Let us know. I was thinking to go back in a few years for the first time. Now I see that going back with friends and others who had similar experiences makes the trip more meaningful and more important. Thank-you again to all who posted photos and memories. Keep them coming! 07/01
Hello. This is Tawnya (Michie) from the class of 1983. I'm posting a request from a friend of mine - Corinne (Bunn) from the class of 1985. She's looking for Stephanie Mendiola who was I think also in the class of 1985. Stephanie was a very talented gymnast. She had an older brother named Ron and an older sister named Charlene. If you can help me locate the Mendiola family, please email me at

Wow folks, You have been proliferous writers since we got back from Napoli. Tom Ross (74) Here again. JP what do you mean Buddy was the only one who was willing to hang out with you. We were all clamoring to do just that. Knock off that poor self image thing that all actors have and know that you have come into your own. Besides, if I could say that I had Buddy Cartee walking by my side as often as you did, then I must truly be a wonderful man. A Kinder Southern Soul than Buddy probably could not be found.. I long for the day JP when you will be acting on the stage of the Guthrie Theatre and I will have to pay big money for my wife and I to see you. What I find most exciting was to see what wonderful people you have all turned into. Paige, I am really serious about 5 more years. I've got the bug now. Besides, I need to go back and find the Cameo of the cat that we lost before we returned home. It was a gift for my mom and I returned empty handed and yes I did toss a coin into! the fountian in Rome and it worked 3 other times. Now that I know that my Napolitan is passible and I can travel anywhere around the city, I might as well. I am currently looking for a vespa like scooter to ride around Minneapolis, but I've gotta figure a way to put Minnesota Ski's on it or it'll only be useful a few months. Kathy and I loved the vespa we rented on Ischcia and I am researching every way possible to get one. Anyone out there who would return to Naples in a Moment if they didn't have to be responsible anymore? I never had more fun in my life as this summers reunion. Kevin, I couldn't believe you weren't there. We had so much fun. Pompei was nothing less than stunning the second time around and the Italian people are every bit as beautiful as I remembered them. Come to think of it... now that the italian girls dress in something other than black mourning dresses... come to think of it... what they dress in now is down right sexy...Yep...That part has changed hasn't it Buddy...Just kidding folks, I am happily married and so is Buddy. Would you believe it, I lost 13 pounds walking around Napoli. It was not only FUN, it was HEALTHY and I think it's the first time I've used those two words in the same sentance since high school. A special word to the Leave ladies, Wow! I can hardly believe it. What wonderful people you have become. Before you were just girls, maybe, I finally grew up. Jon Simms, so many of you wonderful Alumni live in the south, I almost wish I did, but I wouldn't know how to fish when I can't walk out on the ice and put up my ice house. And I wouldn't know what to do with my long underwear, battery heated socks and my $75 Canadian boots gaurnteed to keep you toasty to 45 degrees below Zero. By the way Jon I think that woman has her eye on you. -) What a sweet-heart too. Folks, I can't believe the reunion is over, It was great to see you all. Thanks for the gift of yourselves Tom
