As the inquiry starts into the USS Greenville incident, keep
our fellow classmate, Commander Scott Waddle, in your
thoughts. It is true, our comments are being read here and
quoted. One of mine was in the Honolulu Advertiser. They
haven't seen the CNN message boards yet where I am basically
everywhere! Keep Scott and his family and those of his crew
close to your hearts. They need us to stand with them no
matter what.

I KNOW THIS MESSAGE IS LONG, BUT IF YOU HAVEN'T RECEIVED IT
YET, PLEASE GIVE IT YOUR HEARTFELT CONSIDERATION. Subject:
Coach Dayton and family ask for your help for a fellow
Wildcat Our family first met Commander Scott Waddle, CO of
the submarine USS Greeneville and Forrest Sherman High
School Class of 1977 when he and his parents John and
Barbara Coe and sister Michelle Waddle moved to Naples in
1973. He was a fine young man, a good athlete, and a kind
and caring person. Coach was proud to have him as a captain
of his football team, and to be asked to write one of his
letters of recommendation for acceptance to the United
States Naval Academy. Cindy has stayed in touch with him
over the years and is honored to call him one of her dearest
old friends. After leaving Naples, Scott graduated from the
United States Naval Academy in 1981 with a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Chemistry. After several prestigious
assignments, he attended the National Defense University
Industrial College of the Armed Forces in Washington, D.C.
and earned a Masters Degree in National Resource Strategy.
He became Commanding Officer of the USS Greeneville in 1999.
His personal decorations include the Meritorious Service
Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal (three awards) and the
Navy Achievement Medal. Because of the tragic series of
events that took place when the USS Greeneville collided
with the Ehime Maru in the waters off Pearl Harbor on
February 9th 2001, Scott is not only dealing with the
emotional impact of the tragic loss of innocent lives, but
also with the loss of his command, the possible loss of his
retirement benefits, and maybe even additional legal action.
Scott has worn a Navy uniform for more than 20 years, and
has dedicated over half of his life in service to our
country. The Navy will ultimately decide the issues of
responsibility and culpability in this case. Our concern is
to see that Scott has the best legal representation
available. We are appealing to you to donate to the fund
that has been set up to help with the legal costs of
ScottÌs defense. We have attended some of the Naples
reunions over the last several years. One of the things that
is always talked about when we get together is how we had
such a special bond at Forrest Sherman High School. We stuck
together as a family. Now is the time to reach out to a
member of that family who needs our emotional support, our
prayers, and our financial help. Even if itÌs only
the cost of a Peroni and a pizza back in Bella Napoli, your
contribution will be greatly appreciated. A trust fund has
been set up through the Santa Barbara Bank and Trust, in
partnership with the Navy League of the United States.
Please send your contribution to: Commander Scott Waddle
Defense Fund PO Box 40660 Santa Barbara, CA 93140-0660 If
you would like more information about the fund, contact
Connie Los, President of the Santa Barbara Council of the
Navy League, who is one of the trustees. Her phone number is
805-565-1475, fax number is 805-565-3106, and her e-mail
address is createxcel@earthlink.net. Thank you for your
support of Scott in honor of the unique memories we all
share because of Naples. Sincerely, Coach Russ Dayton Eunice

FROM THE FREAKY COINCIDENCE DEPARTMENT: Navy Pilot drops
accidently drops bomb on military observers. 5 Die.
Commander David Zimmerman, FSHS '78, was given errant
instructions from mis-informed ground crew and accidently
dropped a live bomb too close to ground observers, killing
5. David Zimmerman's sister is Donna Zimmerman. During her
senior year at Forrest Sherman, Donna Zimmerman dated Scott
Waddle, later captain of the USS Greeneville. Both the
Zimmerman and the Waddle lived in Parco Azzurro. While both
Waddle and Zimmerman are victims of faulty information, it's
still tragic. Please keep them both in your thoughts and
forward your support to these two outstanding FSHS
graduates. 3/01
It appears that another alumni has made the front page of
the news. David Zimmerman (Class of 78) was the pilot of the
plane (F/A-18 Hornet) that bombed the military personel in
Kuwait. Lets pray for the people that lost their lives in
the protection of freedom we all enjoy.3/01
Donna Zimmerman Davis ('77) here sharing my prayers for both
my brother and for Scott... and my gratitude to those of you
who are doing the same.
dzdavis@aol.com 3/01
Ok, those that knew Dave Zimmerman in Naples, tell me its
not freaky that he was the pilot of the F-18 in Kuwait. I
mean no disrespect to the families of those that lost loved
ones, but with Naples class of '77 and '78 involved in
tragic accidents - class of '79 (especially those that have
chosen military careers) we are under no pressure to top of
fellow Wildcats. Please say "are you sure?" if anyone tells
you its ok to do something dangerous. - Demo 3/01

My sister is looking for either Judy or Patrick DURAN. They
lived at 141 Via Manzoni around '66-'68. She has a personal
bible of Judy's that she was supposed to give back to Judy

Hey all, Ciao again from Jim Steele FSHS 1973 - 1976. This
bulletin board is a really great thing! I have been in
contact with several old classmates and friends since
finding it--Mike Jones, Linda Rice, Jean Phillipe Berreiter,
Scott Waddle, and Mike Spencer to name a few. It is really
great getting back in contact and catching up. I would love
to hear from all of my old friends and classmates--so, drop
me a line or pass the word! On another note, my heart is
heavy with sadness for Scott and David Zimmerman, their
families, and all involved in their situations. I had the
pleasure of being a classmate of Scott's and getting through
Mr. Burton's Biology class with him and Cindy Boswell as lab
partners. Scott is one of those people you remember as being
an all-around great person--intelligent, witty, personable,
and of strong character and values. I did not really know
David, but I'm sure those of you who did would speak highly
of him of well. I think I can s! peak for all of us
FSHS/NAHS-ers when I say that we are behind them all the
way. Let us all keep them, their families, and all the other
people and families involved in our thoughts and prayers, as
well as show them our support as best we
can.james.steele@jax.ufl.edu

Hello gang...this is Dan Conlon. Time for a brief commercial
worth reading here. I am glad that we (classmates) are able
to share and show support for fellow classmates during these
trouble times. I have made it a rule not to edit any of the
messages I receive for the bulletin board. So I would like
each of you to please be careful what you want posted in
reference to the two military incidents involving fellow
classmates. This site is being watched carefully by the news
media and I would hate to have unknown problems arise from
misinterpretation of a message you have posted. Believe me I
know as I have been there involving court cases from the
past. Anyway back to your regular programing and have a nice
day!!!! 3/01
I would like to second what Dan mentioned. This board is
being watched by the press one of my comments has appeared
in the Honolulu Advertiser. Being forewarned is being
forearmed to quote my dear sister! Keep the faith Scott and
David. Know we keep you close to our hearts these days and
those to come. Chins up and stay strong. (Bethe

Scott Waddle and David Zimmerman. These are honorable men
and there are so many in the Armed Forces... of which you
will never hear about until their time comes to step up and
be counted.David I remember you and and your sister well and
I am equally sure of your commitment to excellence. God
bless you both and know that you have my support. I was then
and remain now so PROUD of Scott. His integrity and courage
are without equal. The man holds his head high even as he
agonizes over the loss of life. I have known him since he
was 13 and never have I met a more compassionate,
empathetic, sincere and extraordinary gentleman. The agony
of the families, the captain and crew of the Greeneville is
so tangible it makes it hard for me to breathe.. Please keep
everyone involved in these tragedies in your thoughts and
prayers as I do. . Dan thanks for your hard work on the BB

great guy, made me tear up.)Let me hear from you, Anna
Prather, Whitey Childers, Doug Cullom, Jackie Russell, Karen

Greetings Wildcats of FSHS. Although not a graduate (never
attended Sherman High) I spent many hours in the halls
there. My Mother, Elinor Holston, was a teacher there from
1968 until her retirement in 1979. She returned to the
States and lived with me in Virginia Beach where I was
stationed (actually NAS Oceana, nearby). Elinor passed away
in 1986, battling pancreatic cancer as only Elinor could do.
We often talked and thought of our many years in Bella
Napoli. I'm retired from the USN now and work as a
contractor in Suffolk, VA. Still live in Va Beach. Long
story short...I can empathize with CDR Waddle. I was in
Japan on business when our VCNO ADM "Fox" Fallon delivered
the apology from Pres Bush. The most deeply appreciated
sentiment received by the Japanese people has been the
letters and public apology CDR Waddle delivered recently.
Regardless of the outcome of the Inquiry and the subsequent
Court Martial, which I 'm sure will happen, I feel that
Scott and his ! family have an amazing amount of support
from his fellow alumni and alumna. Russ Dayton, I saw your
name prominently mentioned several times...greetings old
friend. Anyone from the class of 74 know what ever happended
to Tina Cannon? Just curious! Write to me if anyone wants to
correspond. Tom Holston

HEY SCOTT WADDLE! You should be so proud of the feedback
from our fellow Wildcats. I have received hundreds of
personal responses to the Dayton family e-mail regarding
your defense fund. Many people who graduated from FSHS when
you were only a baby are moved by your character and
integrity and want to help. They never knew you, but they
know the kind of man you are and they are proud of how you
have represented yourself, Forrest Sherman High School, and
the United States of America. Stand tall, my dear friend. I
hold you in the highest possible regard, have you close to
my heart, and keep you always in my prayers. Cindy Dayton

Ciao Tutti, This is John Sims, Class of 71. I was there from
1967-71. I recently returned from Naples where I completed
two weeks of Active Duty with the Navy Reserve. It was
great! I hadn't been there since 1983 and much had changed,
however, for the most part Naples is still Naples.I did a
lot of nostalgiac sightseeing and had dinner with some old
and dear friends (John Brown and his wife Patty, and Laura
Carbonaro and her significant other Bruno). I need to get in
touch with some other lost members of the class of 71. If
anyone has any information on the whereabouts of Donna
Cortesi, Dave Cox, Kelly Colenda or any one else from my
class please contact me at jsims99641@aol.com
