If, you are new to hunting you will find SQUIRREL HUNTING doesn't take a lot of gear and some guys don't even wear camo..I do.But, all you need is A gun that shoots around 12flbs .This can vary a little ..But, make sure you are a good shot .you do want to be ethical about it.That is why I would also, recommend a good scope.And lots of practice .Change the distance of your targets offten and you will learn how to judge distence and place each shot.You may also have limited range with your gun depending on power and accuracy.
Now, with all the preaching out of the way.Here where I live we mainly have the fox squirrel or gray squirrel.I normally get to the woods around 8:00 to 8:30 am and try and find a creek or river .I have better luck up and down the banks. Walk slow and make the lest amount of nose . I try and find a farly clear area 50yrds or so from the water .look ahead in the tree tops as you walk.you may spot one .If you do slowly move behind a tree trunk where he can't see you and ease up to take a shot .If you don't have one or need to get closer. These squirrels are not like the ones in the park .They will be gone in a flash .If they see you so be carful not to alert them. Also ,get a good clear shot at the head and neck area for a fast harvest.
Some times they will move around the oppositen side of the tree . You can some times throw a stick in the bushes behind him and he will move around to your side.
You will find hot spots in the woods and other pleaces you won't see any..But, creeks are a good bet.For one thing the trees grow bigger by the water .which in return they produce better acorns.Look for nut shells at the bottom of the trees . If you see fresh ones that is good sign.
you could find you a spot to set and hide a bit.Gives you a chance to rest.Once you find you a few hot spots .You can come back year after year.
These squirrels like sunny days ..Don't have to be real warm but,sun seems to bring em out.Best time is when it is clearing up after a rain or real cold spell.I hope you come to enjoy the outdoors as much as I do.I see lots of wildlife when I am out there. and it is great to forget about bills and work for a day.Take a kid ,if you can .I feel it teaches respondabity that will last a life time.And a respect for the outdoors.Be safe and have fun ..Always..
