If there was an award for the most incoherent post-nuke movie of all time, 2020: Texas Gladiators would probably win hands down. I still don't totally understand what it's all about, but I'll explain it as best I can. It starts out after the holocaust. The only law in the wasteland are the Rangers. These guys are equipped with only the best weopons, but apparently aren't issued with shirts ( maybe they should see their union). The first scene shows a bunch of mutants (who look a lot like the 'scavengers' of 1990:The Bronx Warriors) killing a bunch of missionaries, and even raping a nun! The Rangers are watching them do all of this, but for some reason they wait until nearly everyone's dead before they help out. After they've killed the mutants, one ranger , obviously jeolous that the filthy mutants got all the action, tries to have his way with Sabrina Sianni. The others, led by Al Cliver are shocked, and banish him. The next scene has Al working in an oil refinery. This confused the hell out of me, because I didn't know whether it was a flashback, or what. All became clear when Sabrina Sianni shows up with a kid. Apparently she's whipped |
Al into submission, and made him give up the incredibly good life of freely wandering the wasteland hunting down bad guys, for the much less exciting life of domestic boredom ( D'Amato proves yet again that he has a sense of humour). The nice, safe , secure life doesn't last long though, when a group of raiders led by Catch Dog ( the banished ranger...small world eh?) attack the refinery. It's heavily defended with mines that are exactly the same as those that protected the Lincoln tunnel in After the Fall of New York. Al and his co-workers are also equipped with small arms, and very fake looking |
machine guns. A pretty cool action sequence ensues. The attackers are driven off, but return with Black One ( Donald O'Brian) and his bulletproof men. They overtake the refinery, and surprisingly kill our hero Al. The next scene takes place in a wild west style bar, and a couple of Als old ranger buddies are there. They spot Sabrina Siani there, being held captive by a Charles Bronson lookalike. It is never explained how she came to be there. The guys win her back by cheating Bronson lookalike in a game of Russian roulette.Acontrived bar room brawl complete with broken chairs and tables starts, and the two rangers are sentenced to ten years in the salt mines. They do hard labour for a while, until yet another ranger, Al Yamanouchi breaks them out , and they all join Sabrina to exact revenge on Black One, and Catch Dog.Along the way, they even stumble on a tribe of post-nuke Indians (well actually Italians dressed as Indians) who don't seem to even know about the holocaust. I've somehow made all this make more sense than it does in in actual movie. The best thing is, it's so confusing that every time you watch it, it's like the first time, and you'll pick up new things. As I said before, it's very incoherent, but if you love Italian post-nuke flicks like I do, then I recommend you give it a try. It's a perfect companion peice to the even better Endgame. |
