Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Directed by John Hughes. Starring Mathew Broderick, Alan Ruck, Mia Sara, Jeffrey Jones, and Jennifer Grey.
Considering Jeffrey Jones' recent trouble with the law ( hey, he always looked like a peodaphile to me !), a review of the movie that made him famous for different reasons back in 1986 seems timely. No, not some blue movie about middle aged perverts having their way with young lads, but that mainstay of eighties teen comedy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
Ferris is that rare guy we all went to school with. The guy who was popular with everyone, yet wasn't one of those upper crust in-crowd dicks who the rest of the school population would secretly wish death on. No, I'm talking about the goofball who could fit in with just about everybody, whos antics could make school just about bearable.
Ferris has just taken his ninth day off of the term, and student advisor Ed Rooney is determined to catch Bueller red handed this time. He wants to make an example of Ferris Bueller, because his nightmare is having to control a whole school full of Ferris wannabes. Ferris' hypochondriac freind Cameron is also absent from school, but is genuinely sick. Before long  Ferris drags him out of bed, and convinces him that they should take Camerons father's Ferrari, and go pick up Ferris' hot girlfreind Sloane for a madcap day on the town.
That's about as complex as the plot gets. Ferris, Cameron, and Sloane having zany adventures in the city while Ed Rooney tries his darndest to catch them out. It's kind of like a Warner Brothers cartoon come to life with bad eighties fashions, and a Wile E. Coyote with a penchant for small boys.
Although this doesn't match
Revenge Of The Nerds, or Fast Times At Ridgemont High as the quintessential teen comedy, Ferris Bueller's Day Off is a fun time capsule for those of us who remember Rubik's Cubes, Breakdancing , and New Kids On The Block. Then again, those are things I'd rather forget. But I digress.... This may be a little smarter, and have less T&A than your average teen comedy (definite downsides for me), but is still a fun movie that will probably gain even more of a cult following due to Jeffrey Jones' child sex charges. I can see it now...parents showing this movie to their kids and saying "Now if a guy that looks like this asks you to help him find his dog, run the other way". Sound advice.
