The Fists of Bruce Lee (1978) |
Directed by Bruce Li . Starring Bruce Li , Lo Lieh , and Chuan Yuan. |
Bruce Li returns yet again to do his utmost best to tarnish the memory of his idol Bruce Lee . This time Bruce is an Interpol agent posing as of all things an electronics repairman in Hong Kong. I'm still not sure what his mission is , but he changes his clothes at every opportunity (often in the middle of a scene ) , and always appears to be concerned about his boss' dental welfare. Of course he also gets the girl , and manages to fit in a number of drawn out fight scenes against both skilled martial artists , and guys who are so laboured that they are obviously hastily recruited production assistants. |
Bruce's slapdash direction makes Ed Wood look like Martin Scorcese. There are that many scenes where absolutely no one is in frame ( and this isn't a result of the pan and scan transfer), and the editing is also particularly poor. Some of the dialog is appallingly bad , and provides most of the laughs here. In one scene , Bruce has just killed an intruder hiding in his girlfriends closet , and says to her " I'm gonna take a look around ..... something may be wrong here". Well no duh Bruce. |
The overdubbed voices are some of the funniest I've heard in a while. Most of the asians have the usual Michael Caine , or John Wayne style voices , but the one white guy in it ( who wears a ridiculous looking blonde wig ) has an asian accent ! The music as usual rips off popular themes from Hollywood productions of the time , and the fashions some of these guys are wearing aren't likely to make anyone miss the seventies much. Keep your eyes peeled for a guy who tells Bruce to meet him at the rubbish dump..... he looks just like a Chinese version of George Eastman. |
This movie also offers a few handy home security tips .... who needs alarms when you can have 500 kg logs , and sharpened pitchforks dropping from trees onto intruders ? Very handy for keeping those pesky mormons at bay . This was boring at times , but had inane dialog , bad fashions , unintentional humour , and bad continuity to die for.... but is perhaps still a total waste of one and a half hours of your life. For Bruce rip-off fans only. |
