This is one of the most unsettling revenge movies ever. It starts out with a young woman named Jennifer ( Camille Keaton) staying by herself in a secluded house by a lake. She's there because she's writing a novel, and needs a quiet place to do it. She orders some groceries from the local supermarket, and they are delivered by the mentally retarded Mathew. Mathew has the mind of a child, and asks Jennifer if she'll be his freind. |
When he gets back to town, he brags about his new freind to Johnny the gas station attendant, Stan, and Andy. They're three locals, who let Mathew hang out with them so that they can have someone to laugh at. Later when they're drunk, they concoct a plan to get Mathew laid. They go out to the house, grab Jennifer, and drag her into the woods, telling Mathew that she's all his. He gets pretty confused by all of this, and wants no part of it. So the other boys take turns in raping her in what has to be the nastiest, |
most drawn out rape scene in cinematic history ( it goes for about twenty minutes). They leave her lying in the mud. She finally makes it back to her house, but they are there waiting for her, and finally con Mathew into raping her. The others leave, giving Mathew a knife, and telling him to kill her. He can't do it though, and smears a little blood on the knife to show the other boys that the deed was done. This sets the scene for Jennifer to exact brutal and bloody revenge on the rapists in various creative ways. |
I Spit On Your Grave is a much better movie than a lot of people give it credit for. It is a very unsettling film. It has no soundtrack whatsoever, which gives the whole thing a very realistic feel. It really doesn't pull any punches. Unlike a lot of revenge flicks, you aren't really sure where your loyalties lie. At first, seeing the innocent Jennifer being de-flowered by a bunch of hoods, you want blood. But then something strange happens. She becomes very twisted, brutally killing the childlike Mathew, who was really innocent, forced to do the deed by the others. He really wasn't deserving of being garotted. Then we see Johnny sharing some family time with his wife, and his two children. Jennifer sees this, and seduces him. They are in the bath, and she asks him all about his family before castrating him in an incredibly convincing scene that really had me crossing my legs. Then she casually bolts the bathroom door, goes downstairs, and puts on a record. All the while, Johnny ( who by now I was feeling very sorry for) is writhing around upstairs, whimpering like a child as he slowly bleeds to death. The other two weren't given much in the way of characterisation, so their deaths weren't that shocking. Somehow by the end , we're left with the impression that Jennifer has become more evil than her tormenters. |
Feminist groups have hailed this as being a 'womens empowerment' movie. I dont really agree with that, because I don't think being raped for over twenty minutes is too empowering no matter how extreme your revenge is ( I didn't hold Marcellus Wallace from Pulp Fiction in any higher regard when he was gonna get medieval on Zed ,the rapist). Whatever the case, this is a solid little no-holds-barred thriller , a refreshing change from incredibly watered down thrillers like Seven. A word of warning though, like Bloodsucking Freaks , most people will find this extremely offensive. |
