Reflections Of Evil (2001)
Directed by Damon Packard. Starring Damon Packard, Beverly Miller, Nicole Vanderhoff, and Chad Nelson.
When Damon Packard contacted me offering to send me a copy of his film on dvd, I naturally thought to myself : "that was kind of him" (as I always do when filmmakers and distributors send me screeners). I wasn't aware of the depths of this filmmakers generosity though.
Damon has sent literally thousands of copies of
Reflections Of Evil to unsuspecting L.A. residents. He's a filmmaker selfless enough to basically give his film away...almost unheard of in the most materialistic era the world has ever seen. Copies of this film have popped up in letterboxes, and elsewhere all over Los Angeles.
Although many may consider Reflections of Evil to be digital junkmail, and throw it into the nearest bin, cult film afficianado's will find the experience rewarding if they find a copy drifting around L.A. or elsewhere. Describing the plot of this movie is like trying to describe the plot of a David Lynch film.
It's a nightmare vision of Los Angeles. At least I hope it's just a nightmare vision (since I'm flying there in two days).Bobby is a roving watch salesman. He buys watches at a two dollar store downtown and tries to sell them on the streets. He isn't too successful though, and seems to be more than a little deranged. All of the citizens of L.A. are hostile towards Bobby, and the four legged canine residents of the city are even less freindly.
Reflections Of Evil also utilises stock footage from movies, advertisements, and even the news. The introduction by Tony Curtis is also priceless. No, Packard didn't hire Curtis (although he probably could have for about five bucks), but overdubbed an old laserdisc introduction. Damon Packard delivers a highly convincing performance as Bobby. At times this feels almost like a documentary when he interacts with others. It had me wondering how many of the characters in the film were merely innocent bystanders being harrassed by Packard.
Right now you're probably thinking "If it's entertaining, why's the guy giving it away?". Well, this is probably one of the least mainstream freindly movies ever made. Most people will find the plot confusing, and the film could probably do with 15 or 20 minutes being cut for pacing. Still, if you're a veteran of cult film viewing you'll find this pretty entertaining. It will also leave you thinking about what you've just seen for several days, a feat that Hollywood can rarely achieve. And you can't argue with the price of the dvd.
