This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse
aka. Esta Noite Encarnarei No Teu Cadaver (1966)
Directed by Jos'e Mojica Marins. Starring Jos'e Mojica Marins, Tina Wohlers, Nadia Freitas, and Jose Lobo.
When At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul became such a huge success, like most filmmakers Jos'e Mojica Marins decided to make a sequel. Unlike most filmmakers however, he decided to try and make it an innovative  improvement upon the original. This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse picks up right where the previous film left off.
Ze' do Caixao the unholy undertaker wakes up in a hospital after the events of the first movie. He soon recovers, and returns to terrorise his old hometown. Ze' still wants to find the perfect woman to give him a son. He sets about kidnapping prospective brides, and subjecting them to various tortures to find one worthy of impregnation. Naturally the townspeople see Ze's return, and the kidnappings as more than a  coincidence and form a posse to take out Ze', who they feel is in league with the devil.
A lot of filmmakers have laughably been hailed as genius' over the years (personally I think of a genius as someone who cures cancer, or world hunger, or finds a way to stop pastry going soggy in a microwave). The term has been bandied around that much that it's pretty much meaningless now anyway. But if a filmmaker were to be labelled a genius, few would have more of a right to the title than Jos'e Mojica Marins.
With next to no money or resources, Marins made This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse a classic that has stood the test of time. The highlight of the movie is definitely when Ze' is dragged to hell by a hideous anorexic demon. No CGI here, just a good old fashioned freak of nature in a latex suit and disturbing make-up.
When he is dragged down to hell, this black & white film changes to Wizard of Oz - style technicolour. Marin's hell isn't fire and brimstone, but a frozen series of caves where naked sinners are tormented by blizzards, pitchforks, and spikes. This stuff is more surreal than anything David Lynch has ever done.
If you haven't seen a Jos'e Mojica Marins movie, you really are missing out on an important part of the horror genre. Why this guy isn't more popular is beyond me. If you want to see something that's still as groundbreaking today as it was 30 or 40 years ago, check out At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul, or This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse.
