So what are the highlights of this disc I hear you ask? Well I'll run through a few. Firstly, there's Mondo Ford, a seven minute short subject directed by Scott Calonico. Mondo Ford is made up entirely of stock footage, and plays like a Zelig style mockumentary. It poses the theory that Gerald Ford was in fact an alien, who was behind the J.F.K. assassination, and was taught to play football by bigfoot. It works well, and doesn't overstay its welcome. Arrowhead Beer by Jeff Bacon is another highlight. This short is a collection of lost advertisements for the fictitious Arrowhead beer company. This short reminded me a lot of Australian television comedy, and was funny as hell. 30 Minutes Or Less is about a hapless pizza delivery guy who stumbles on a plot to revive Walt Disney. This short had a lot of funny characters, and was pretty pacey and entertaining. Without a doubt, the most entertaining short film on The Best Of Tromadance Volume 2 was Foet. A lot of short films can become tedious and wear out their welcome in minutes, but Foet wasn't long enough. When it ended, I found myself wanting more. Foet tells the story of the latest fashion item on 5th avenue Manhattan... handbags made from the skin of aborted foetus'. If director Ian Fischer is reading this, there's a whole feature inside that short just screaming to be made. It would be a lot like Halloween 3...only entertaining. As an added bonus, this dvd features a look at the Tromadance panel. I always wondered if Mark Borchardt from American Movie was for real, or whether that film was the independant movie equivalent of This Is Spinal Tap. Unless the guy is in character 24/7, then apparently he is for real. The panel discussion had me laughing more than Arrowhead Beer did. Mark Borchardt couldn't seem to fathom the topic of 'Is art being stolen from the people'. The dvd is worth purchasing just for this panel discussion. If you enjoy good short films that aren't artistically pretentious, grab a copy of this dvd today. |
