IRC Help Guide Hi, this is a simple help guide on IRC.This a list of the following topics this page contains: What is IRC? How to make your own Nickname (plus advanced nick help) What is Chanserv , Nickserv and Memoserv? What are popups? What does Ping, lag,op,IRCop,voice actually mean and do? What is IRC? IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is basicly a chat program that links many people up to different servers around the world, all the servers are grouped into , how shall I call it,stations,(IE:Telstra). We use irc.telstra.com. Once connected to a server you will have a selection of channels, that selection is specific to what irc server you joined. Irc.telstra.com is protected by what you might call, police. They are called IRCop's. They enforce the rules on telstra (the rules are available from www.telstra.com/chat. There is about +/-250 channels on telstra. Now each channel ie #fun.trivia is also protected by Channel operators. These people can remove you from the channel, they can be reconised by the @ next to their nickname. How to create your own nickname Now,this is very important. First you need to choose a nickname, now, this nickname has to be unused, and may only contain letters, numbers and these special characters: _ [ ^ { - , to find out if a nickname has been taken you can use the command: /nickserv info nicknamehere , (nicknamehere=nick you want) and if info comes up on that nick it is taken, if not its free. Now you need to change your nick to that nickname, this command is: /nick nicknamehere , now your nickname should have changed to what you wanted. Now you need to register your nickname , this command is /register passwordhere yourtelstraemailaddy , (passwordhere: password of your choice here) (yourtelstraemailaddy=your registered telstra username@telstra.com. Now choosing a password is a important businesss, for the best safety choose a password that contains numbers and letters, like R2fg9ho. Now, remember that password because you will need it ALOT. After you have done this a long text should appear confirming your registration of your new nick Now u need to protect your nickname from others: To do this type /nickserv set kill on Summary: Choose a nickname : /nick nickhere (choose a nick that hasn't been taken, remember most ordinary names have been taken) Register your nickname : /nickserv register passwordhere (choose a password urself) emailaddyhere (telstra addy should be used) Protect your nickname : /nickserv set kill on Identify yourself on Connection : /nickserv identify yourpassword (the password you used for registereing) or u may just type /pass yourpassword Advanced nick help Now, sometimes you might come across some of the difficulties listed below with answer. My nick is Ghosted (You got disconected and your nick is still there) Well, this can be solved with this command: /nickserv Ghost nickname password after this has been done a text should appear saying your ghost has been killed. Then type /nick nickname and identify yourself Someone got my nickname and I can't get it back Ok, nasty situation , this can be done with this command: /nickserv release nickname password Repeat same steps after this as with Ghosted nick What does Chanserv, Nickserv and memoserv actually do and mean? Ok, A quick and easy explanation. NICKSERV:This is a service that services all the nicknames and passwords. CHANSERV: A channel service, holds all info on the channels topics, ops, chanpassword and so on. MEMOSERV: Is a service that lets you send memo's to other people. For more information on each server type either /chanserv help , /memoserv help or /nickserv help . There we go. What are popups? Well, (fun) popups are premade colorfull designs. They can be done with 1 to 2 clicks of the mouse. You might already have some, try it by left clicking on a name in the list then right clicking and a few options should come up, look for popups. If you haven't got any then i'm sure you can either politely ask someone you know who has got them or you can get them from sites by searching for mIRC popups. On our popup page we have a few links to popup sites What script do I recommend to use? I personally recommend standard mIRC 32.exe with addons. mIRC is updated regularly and you set it up to your own personal liking. There are many scripts available and personally i have found them good especially if you choose a script written for the telstra server. Ask others to recommend a script they may use and what its features are. Choose the script on the features you feel will enhance your chat experience. Some terms used in IRC , Ping, Op, IRCop, Lag... Ping : Is a SIGNAL sent from one computer to another computer and then back again. It is used to measure the speed of the net connection. The higher the number of seconds the slower the connection. This slowness is called lagging. Lag: Means there is a high ping reply . Mostly above 15 seconds would mean Lag in IRC terms. Op: Stands for Operator , the person who enforces rules on a channel Sop: Mean Senior Operator - chooses and trains the Op's - is ultimately responsible for the channel IRCop : A person who enforces the rules over all channels in Telstra chat Voice : Someone with a + before there nick . In #fun.trivia it means, op in training. Any further information about IRC and in particular irc.telstra.com can be found in the many #help rooms available. |
