Gobbler Aging |
Using the gobbler's beard to determine the age is not always the best method. Several factors may shorten the beard. As an example, freezing rain will make the beard brittle and break off. A lot of older birds taken, have been aged incorrectly due to incorrect beard length. The best determination for a gobbler's age is by the measurement of the spur length. Measure from the edge of the spur where it connects to the leg to the tip. 1 year old up to 5/8 inch 2 years old 5/8 to 7/8 inch 3 years old 7/8 to 1 1/8 inch 4 years old 1 1/8 to 1 1/4 inch 5+ years old over 1 1/4 inch |
