Selecting your shot and choke!
Federal law requires duck hunters to use non-toxic shot for waterfowl. For a lot of hunters this means using steel shot. Steel shot is the least expensive of all the non-toxic loads.

Since steel pellets weight less than lead pellets, shoot a pellet that is two sizes larger than you would with lead shot. At close range use #4 for ducks and for pass shots use #2.

Whichever pellet size you choose, shoot it from an open-choked shotgun. Steel loads pattern tighter than lead pellets. Improved cylinder is ideal for anything other than pass shooting. A skeet choke works even better.
