(11/7/01) FURY SPLITS ATLANTA PLAY

Fury Gold split their two in state games this week, losing to arch Rival Stone Mountain 3 - 0 and then defeating U16 Region 3 Champion Atlanta Fire 2 –1.

Game 1 – Stone Mountain

Against Stone Mountain, Fury simply had an "off" game, giving up two goals in the first half and creating few scoring chances. Fury picked up the pace a bit in the second half with several threatening possessions, but the shots were either outside the frame or hit directly at the Storm keeper. Storm closed out the game with a 3-0 score.

Game 2 – Atlanta Fire

Fury's second opponent was the highly touted Atlanta Fire, which includes several national & regional team players. Fury stymied the Fire by allowing only one shot on goal and a total of only five attempted shots. Fury's defense led the way. Nate Umberg, Patrick Ahern, Russ Jones and Winston Garth all had strong, physical games against the Fire. Fury Sweeper Andrew Alexander also had a fine game playing a deep sweep, cutting off the Fire's attempted through-balls. The Fury defense was strongly supported by the mid fielders Drew McClure, Joey Grigsby, Chris Jones, Scott Voigt and Tyler Davis, who shut down the Fire's wing play and forced the ball to the middle of the field.

The Fire struck first off of a counter play following a failed Fury corner kick just 12 minutes in. But Fury kept up the high pressure (a missing ingredient against Stone Mountain). Fury leveled the game just six minutes later when Alex Grigalunas took a pass from Brandon Clark and crossed up the Fire goalie, threading a shot to the back post as the keeper dashed across the goal to protect the near post. Fury notched the go-ahead goal when Nate Umberg crossed the ball in to striker Peter Bemisderfer, who moved aggressively to take the cross. Thanks to Bemisderfer's high pressure, the Fire's keeper could only punch the ball away, but the ball landed on the foot of Matt Housley, who drained the shot for a 2-1 Fury lead. Fury out shot the Fire 16 - 5. Fury had 9 shots on goal, while the Fire's sole shot on goal resulted in their only score.

(11/6/01) FURY WINS IN FLORIDA U18 PLAY

Fury Gold finished up its Region 3 Premier League Tournament Play in Fort Myers, Florida, winning two games and losing one against another round of U18 play. With a 10-3-1 record, Fury has capture 31 out of a possible 42 points, and maintained its 1st place lead in Region 3.

Game 1 vs Dunedin

Fury quickly jumped out in front with a goal by Tyler Davis off a fedd from Peter Bemisderfer in the 9th minute of play. Just eleven minutes later, Matt Housley scored on an assist by Brandon Clark. Housley returned Clark favor 20 minutes later by beating his man and cut in on the Dunedin keeper and laid off a perfect goalmouth pass to Clark for the tap in at the 40th minute.

Dunedin, having been completely outplayed in the 1st half, opened the 2nd half by bunkering in their defensive zone and going with one forward. It took Fury just 3 minutes to crack that scheme wide open when Scott Voigt megged his man and slotted a pass to Tyler Davis all alone at the 6 for Davis' 2nd goal of the game and a 4 -0 Fury lead. Dunedin continued employing their defensive tactic when at the 85th minute, Peter Bemisderfer scored off an assist feed from Matt Housley. The only negative was Keeper Charlie Edwards’ 2nd yellow card in stoppage time, resulting in a PK, which was defended by stand-in (wooden Indian) keeper Andrew Alexander. Final Score Fury 5 - 1.

Game 2 - Clearwater

Next up for Fury was the U18 Florida State Champion, Clearwater Chargers. Six of the Clearwater players are scholarship bound to D1 schools such as Clemson and Furman. In a game played on a tiny field, Fury fell behind 1 -0 on a PK following a very questionable sequence of calls (or non-calls). A sideline ball had been played out of bounds by Clearwater, but the AR was out of position and allowed play to continue. The Clearwater player brought the ball back in to play and was challenged inside the 6 with a hard shoulder tackle, where he went down in an obvious flop that was called a foul. The PK was converted against replacement keeper Tyler Davis. Fury fell further behind later in the half on a crossing play which appeared to glance off a Fury player for an own-goal.

Early in the 2nd half Clearwater struck for a 3rd time off a beautiful cross and an equally beautiful shot to the upper 90 against co-replacement keeper Peter Bemisderfer. But Fury responded 3 minutes later when defender Winston Garth pushed a through ball up to Tyler Davis who rifled a shot into the twine. Fury continued its unrelenting pressure when off a direct kick, sweeper Andrew Alexander placed a perfect shot up and over the Clearwater keeper to cut Fury's deficit to one. Several Fury players had excellent chances in the remaining minutes of the game. Brandon Clark, Drew McClure, PatrickAhern, Matt Housley and Tyler Davis were all denied by the Clearwater keeper. With seconds remaining, Davis was stopped point blank and when the rebound went flying out, Nate Umberg sent the rebound barely over Clearwater’s net. Fury falls, 3-2.

Game 3 - Palm Harbor

In another game dominated by Fury, the Norcross club coasted to a 3 - 1 win as Scott Voigt had a goal and an assist, while Tyler Davis netted 2 more goals and an assist. For Davis, his 2 goals gave him 13 on the season.

(9/25/01) FURY KEEPS UP THEIR WINNING WAYS IN U18 PLAY

Fury's 1st opponent was Region 3 U18 Runner-up, GFC. In a tightly contested match, Fury lost on a last minute goal, 3-2. Fury was out shot 7 to 3 in the 1st half and trailed 2-1 at half time.

Fury missed tying the score at 3-3 in the 2nd minute of extra time when Brandon Clark's header went just wide of the goal.

Game 2 - St. Giles U18

Fury's 2nd opponent was St. Giles' U18 team. In a game dominated by Fury in the 1st half, Fury came away with only 1-0 had time lead on a goal by Tyler Davis at the 35 minute mark, off a pretty feed by Brandon Clark.

The 2nd half saw Fury's fortunes turn as mid fielder Joey Grigsby suffered what appeared to be a serious ankle injury. Fury found itself short 4 players and fought desperately to hold onto their 1-0 lead. St. Giles applied unrelenting pressure, but solid defensive play from Drew McClure, Alex Grigalunas (filling in as sweeper), Chris Jones, Steven Henderson, Winston Garth and Patrick Ahern kept St. Giles at bay.

Late in the 2nd half, Grigalunas went out, and Matt Housely (normally Gold's stirker) becamse Fury's third sweeper of the weekend. Keeper, Charles Edwards made several fine plays and saves, particularly one spectacular kick-save to protect the precarious lead. Fury was outshot 11 to 6 in the 2nd half, but held on for a tough fought 1-0 win.

Game 3 - James Island Battery

Fury's 3rd game was against the James Island Battery. Fury completely dominated the 1st half, spending virtually all of the half on the Battery's half of the pitch. Despite this large territorial advantage and outshooting their opponent 14-5, Fury found themselves trailing 1-0 at half.

Battery scored again 10 minutes into half number 2. However, Fury kept up the unrelenting pressure and finally broke through at the 60 minute mark on a goal my mid fielder, Tyler Davis. Striker, Matt Housley, had fought his way down low on the left wing side before he beat the defender along the goal line and headed toward the goal. Pulling out the defenders near the goal, Housley slipped a pass to Davis, who drilled a shot for Fury's 1st goal.

A fast flurry of goals started just 10 minutes later, when Fury struck again. This time Brandon Clark banged in a Chris Jones cross to knot the score in the 70th minute. Less than 1 minute later, Fury scored after the Battery Keeper tried to catch Fury off guard with a fast breakout. Reading the keeper like a cornerback reads the opposing quarterback, Gold mid and Duluth HS footballer Tyler Davis intercepted the pass and fired a 35-yard shot into the open goal for Fury's 1st lead of the game.

Sensing the Battery's panic, Fury kept up the pressure, and 9 minutes later, striker, Peter Bemisderfer, scored on a Cruyff move after receiving a goal mouth feed from fellow striker, Matt Housley. Fury scoring was closed out 2 minutes later on close in shot by Chris Jones off a feed from Steven Henderson.

Fury's defense was again led solidly by the fine play of Winston Garth, Patrick Ahern, Alex Grigalunas and Ches Montgomery. Montgomery played a solid game after being pressed into service as a marking back due to the Fury injuries.

Next up for Fury, Quest United on the 30th (stay tuned that game may again be rescheduled)

Finals - United Quest Red

The finals saw Fury go up against its Georgia arch rival United Quest Red. Fury and United had tied each other in their 2 previous meetings, 2-2 & 0-0, both Fury road games. Both teams played solid defense and contested every lose ball. United, long noted for their solid defensive play held the Fury to only 6 shots in the game. While Fury is more noted for its offensive game, its defense stacks up as well as anyone's. Fury only allowed United 9 shots in the game, of which only 6 landed on goal. United had 3 shots in the 1st half and 6 in the 2nd when United was pressing. Keeper, Charles Edwards, continued his fine play, making several outstanding saves and breaking up several play-ins.
