Back in ancient China there was a legend that said when a country was on the brink of destruction, a girl would appear from another world to become their "Miko", or priestess, and acquire the divine power of their god, "Suzaku" in our case, and lead the country.

"The Four Gods of Heaven and Earth" scriptures on Fushigi Yuugi said the sky was divided in four equal parts- north, south, east, west, and each of these quadrants had seven constalations. In the same way the earth was also divided in the following regions. Each region had a god protector- "Genbu" ruled the North, "Suzaku" the South, "Seiryuu" ruled the East, and "Byakko" the West. Konan was located on the South, so Suzaku, represented by the Mystical red Chinese phoenix or Red Peacock of the South, was Konan's god and protector.

Suzaku's human form.

Seiryuu, god of the East of Kutou, was represented by the Eastern Blue Dragon, Genbu, god of the Northern of Hokkan was represented by the Northern Tortoise, and Byakko, god of the Western Country of Sailo, was represented by the Western White Tiger.

Each of the four gods (Susaku, Seiryuu, Genbu, Byakko) all have 7 constellations in their quadrants, each of them named. Each constellation also has a human that by bearing the name of the constellation as well as the character of the constellation somewhere on their body, represents the constellation. They are the 7 Seishi, or Celestial Warriors. Suzaku's 7 Seishi are Hotohori, Tamahome, Nuriko, Chichiri, Tasuki, Mitsukake, and Chiriko. The purpose of the Seishi, is to protect the Miko/Priestess before she calls the god. To call each respective god, the Miko must recite an incantation which is in the scroll of the The Universe of the Four Gods, and then burn the scroll within a sacred fire, while surrounded by her 7 Seishi. Without all 7 Seishi, this ceremony will not work.
