The Futhark Alphabet and the Constellations |

Before we proceed let us recap the first three steps in deciphering the Runic, or secret meaning, of the Futhark Alphabet. Step One Tyr's Aett is the First Aett, Hagall's Aett is the Second Aett and Frey's Aett is the Third Aett. See "The Futhark Alphabet". The First Aett begins with the word "Odin", the Father of the Gods. The Second Aett begins with Sowilo, the Sun. The Third Aett begins with Wunjo, the Standard of the gods. Step Two The symbols and letter sounds of the Runic Alphabet were inherited from the Ancient Egyptian Hieroglyphs, via Proto Sinaitic Hieroglyphs, Phoenician Script and Archaic Greek. See "Development of Hieroglyph Runes". Step Three The first of the Sacred Meanings encoded into the Futhark Alphabet is that of the Precession of the Equinoxes. This indicated that Astronomy is an important factor to be considered in deciphering the secret meaning of the Futhark alphabet. See "Futhark Runes and the Precession of the Equinoxes". |
The "Runic" Alphabet and the "Futhark" Alphabet are one and the same. The difference in terminology is due to dissimilar interpretations of the writing system. Inherent in the "Runic" Alphabet are "Secret Meanings" ... the word "Rune" being derived from "Run" (pronounced roon), an Anglo-Saxon word meaning "Secret" or "Mystery". In contrast, the "Futhark" Alphabet is merely a means of conveying letters and sounds. |
Here are the names given to the symbols of the Runic Alphabet |

Taking this idea of Astronomy a step further, some of the Futhark Runes can be shown to be connected with Constellations, as well as the Sun. |

"Sowilo" translates literally as the "Sun". |

"Fehu", meaning "cattle", represents the Constellation of Taurus complete with the Bull's Horns. |

"Gebo" symbolized the goddess Gefn, also known as Freyr. Being Mistress of the Gods she represented the Constellation of Virgo. |
"Ehwaz" translates as "horse" and as such can be interpreted as representing the Constellation of Pegasus. |

"Mannaz" translates as "men" and can be interpreted as two identical men facing each other. As such this rune would represent the Constellation of Gemini, the Twins. |
![]() |
"Dagaz", although translating as "Day", began its life as the symbol of a Fish.It can therefore be argued that this rune represents the Constellation of Pisces. |

"Thurisaz" symbolises the God Thor and represents the Constellation of Orion. "Thurisaz" means "Giant" and the Constellation of Orion is referred to as "The Giant". Also Orion holds a Club (Thor's Hammer) in his right hand. Finally the shape of the rune "Thurisaz" looks like a diminutive of the shape of the Constellation of Orion. |
We have now taken the fourth step in deciphering the Runic or secret meaning of the Futhark Alphabet. To discover the full secret meaning of the Futhark Alphabet Click Here |
