News Briefs The Year in Review (5/24/04) Today, it has been one full year (yesterday if you discount the leap year) since the last performance by Sausalito open to the general public. True, Sausalito has performed on several occassions, however infrequent, over the past year (many of them during the summer of 2003), but all performances were for private audiences. No admissions were collected, no posters hung, no word was spread, only those invited for the events at which the band performed were allowed to attend. While it would be easy to assume, based largely on the aforementioned lack of public performances, that Sausalito was dormant, that is not the case at all. Over the past year, Sausalito has developed by leaps and bounds, expanding their musical inventory, exploring new dimensions of their sound, and even developing the name, Sausalito. Change is slow, but the progress Sausalito has made privately over the past year, despite the geographic distance between members and their many individual obligations, is impressive. Look for future updates, but do not be surprised if you do not find them frequently. Do not be suprised, however, when you do. And do not be surprised when those updates include details of a Sausalito recording and performance, solidly scheduled and underway. Sausalito may be publicly dormant, but privately, the group is as vivacious as ever.
Recap of the May 24th show, downloads, and more (6/3/03) The Future Husbands played a nine-song set at the Summit Cafe in Derry, NH on Saturday May 24, 2003. The night featured the debut of "Stone Face Eulogy," the band's intense blues song about the loss of the Old Man of the Mountain. As Mike said of the song, "you take it seriously or lightly.. but either way, it's probably best to keep things in perspective." Also making its debut that evening was "Urban Rock Mosaic," an artistic spoken word number. The band opened the show to loud applause with a cover of the Troggs' "Wild Thing." Overall, despite a slightly small crowd and some tuning problems, the last-minute show was a success and a blast for the band. In other news, audio samples are now available for download at the audio page. The Future Husbands will also be marketing via this website and future appearances, the demo "Best of 2002-03," a fifteen-track, 54-minute cd. For more information, see the audio page. Also, original bassit Jon Gulley has announced that he has joined a band in Pittsburgh, PA, reducing the Future Husbands' numbers to three: Mike, Neal, and Eric (with lots of help from Jay Trayne). The sever was a peaceful one and the FH wish Jon the best with his new group. Mike, Neal, and Eric will all be spending the summer at Sebago Lake, Maine. While they will be spending much of the time jamming, this site will not be updated much due to the band's inability to access the internet over the summer. However, periodic updates will be posted.. especially or shows scheduled over the summer. In the fall, the Future Husbands hope to have a brand new website and a whole new name ready to go.
Recap of March 22nd show at the Well, plus FANtastic fans (3/23/03) The Future Husbands played their second show at the Well in Portland, Maine for the second time in two weeks. Rather than being the last band of the evening as they were on March 8th, the Future Husbands were the opening act this weekend. The band featured an abbreviated setlist which was tweaked slightly during the performance. It was as follows (songs with an * following them were added on the spot, songs with > connecting them were segued into each other): "You, Me, and a Led Zeppelin CD" > "Ice Mountain" > "Freight Train to Georgia" "The Ballad of Joe English Hill" "Posters on the Wall" "Love" "You May Think* " "Street Corner Ditty* "Lydia." The audience was warm, but not quite as large or engaged as at the previous show. Said Neal, "Now I know what bands mean when they talk about having a bad crowd." Not that the crowd was bad, they were nice and supportive, but less so than on March 8th, making the band's performance a little more nerve-racking. The band had the performance video taped and also taped their excursions following the show. The band plans to do a little more filiming so they can eventually produce a short movie, mostly for their own enjoyment, but of course, it would be offered for sale as well. Finally, two awesome fans from Massachusetts, Lianna and Meghan, who saw the band at their November 30, 2002 peformance at the Sad Cafe drove two hours to watch the band at the Well this past weekend. The Future Husbands are eternally grateful for these two FANtasist (yeah I know that's cheesy) fans. Thanks so much!
Recap of the Well show of March 8th plus future show news (3/9/03) The Future Husbands played a great set last night at the Well in Portland, Maine. The band played to a more than receptive audience and wrapped after roughly an hour of playing. The band played some old favorites, among them "You, Me, and a Led Zeppelin CD" and the traditional show closer, "Coming Home." The band's first completed song, "Coming Home" was expanded beyond its usual acoustic guitar (Neal Munn) and vocals (Mike Bellefeuille) to include Jay Trayne on bass, Eric Carvill on electric guitar (with an awesome reverb effect) and Olivia Munn adding a second set of vocals. Olivia also sang "After Hours" (The Velvet Underground, 1969), the only cover of the night. The set also included three jam songs, a spoken-word storytime ballad, "The Balllad of Joe English Hill," and a spoken-word love song, "Lydia," both of which were completed only hours before the band took the stage. The band was even able to play an encore with a spoken-word version of "You May Think," which despite Neal's distortion pedal causing some anticlimactic delays at the song's conclusion, was a nice close to the night. Singer/songwriters Dan Knudsen (djknudsen@hotmail.com) and Glade Swope (contact coming soon) also performed seperately that night. The Well was so receptive to the Future Husbands that they were asked to return for a show Saturday March 22 pending availability (click here for more details). We'll keep you posted. |
