Welcome to the Getting Ready Part of my site! This
site is for the about to be a ferret owner people! If your getting a ready for a
ferret real soon these are some reminders and things to do so your are absolutly
ready for your ferret. First I suggest if you havent already take a look at the
Caring and Needs
section of the site so you have absolutly everything you need! And dont forget
anything. This section will remind you on some thing like; picking the right
room, ferret-proofing adn some other stuff. So enjoy, and as always before

I. Picking the
Right Room
A. Whole Room for
Ferret or to Share
First thing you need to decide is if your going to
give your ferrets a whole room to themselves, or one to share. A whole room
means that you will give that room completly to the ferrets, noone else. Sharing
a room means that the ferrets withh share a room with someone or something else,
your bedroom, teh living room, or any other room.

B. Whole Room
Qualities
If you have a room your not using and you decided
to give it to your fuzzies here is what you need. Giving them a whole room does
not mean that you dont need a cage. You will sometimes have to let people in the
room, for example the terminator, or something else happens. The room must be
completly safe. No possible way they can get out (dont ever leave the window
open when your not there), there must be no wholes leading to the pipes, the
vent for the air conditioner must be closed ect. Safety first. When your ferrets
are always out make sure you leave the door to the cage open so they can eat and
sleep and use the litter box. You must organize the room, adn toys you do not
feel safe without supervision are to be kept out of reach or in another room.
Cleaning supplies I suggest you put in a bucket and store in another room, so
when you have to clean just bring in the bucket. Treats and food must definetly
be kept or of reach or in another room. You do not want your ferrets eating a
whole tube of ferret vite. Do not think that just because they cant open it they
wont get it. You must think of other ways they might get it, so you better be
safe and keep it out of the room. You can also use a cabinet with those kid
locks so that you have to push down on it so it opens, if you want you can
store the food and cleaning supplies there. Do not leave teh garbage open in teh
room, ever, they will rip it up, if the bag is full tie it up and thrown it in a
trash in the garage, it if not full twist the top and put it in the cabinet or
other room, or in teh bucket. For more cleaning see the

section. So the basic rule to setting up your room is safety first!

C. Share Room
Qualities
Setting up a room that you are going to share is
much simpler than a whole room. I sugges taking a bucket for all your cleaning
supplies and putting it next to the cage. Then take a box of small garbage bags
and put it next to the cage. A room you are going to share needs to be ferret
proofed (see II. A and B). In a room you are going to share I suggest to keep
electrical obeject ar a minimum. If you do have electrical object tie all the
wires up with duck tape or anything else, put some bitter apple stuff you can
get at teh ferret store on the duck tape and hang it up. I am not saying ferret
chew wires, mine dont, but you never now if they take a curiousity to it.

II. Ferret Proofing
A. What is it?
Ferret proofing is blocking all wholes and taking
all objects that can harm ferrets. Any small whole, and any object to be blocked
or stored away from reach.

B. How to do it
Even people who are giving their ferrets a whole
room must ferret proof. First you pick the room where your ferrets are going to
play the most. Crawl on your hands and knees and look for small wholes, even
though you know there is no danger in it block it, they might get stuck! Under
coaches is fine, and between objects that are leaning on teh wall, like a big
mirror, is fine too, but any hole that needs blocking must be blocked. If your
ferret proofing for a room just for the ferrets you must block it extra strong.
By blocking I dont mean a pillow, or a garbage can, ferrets easily squeeze
through or move it away. Use a metal net and nail it in. or plastic something
adn NAIL it in, do not tape it. You must also ferret proof rooms that you are
going to be taking ferrets in, you dont have to ferret proof the whole house,
just the rooms that your are going to let your ferrets explore and play in.

III. Cleaning Section
A. Tips and
Tricks To Keep It Smell Free
Remember cleaning up after your ferrets is very
important, here are some tricks to make it easier for you to clean:
1. Keep all cleaning supplies in a bucket
2. Use natures miracle
3. Buy a small brush to brush up thrown food adn litter
4. Do not use Lisol or any other subtances which might be harmful
5. Store all of your supplies out of reach of ferrets
6. Clean the cage 1 a day (including litter)
7. Change litter 1-2 times a day
8. Wash the beds and hammocks
9. Do not give your ferrets baths often
10. Litter train your ferrets

B. Reminders
Remember that ferrets can get smelly if you do not
clean enough after them. If you are doing everything and cleaning adn it still
smells bad I suggest opening the window to let some fresh air come it, but I do
not think it will ever smell that bad. Remember not to give to much food so it
doesnt turn bad before they can eat it all and change the water daily!
