Descendants of John Sallis I

Second Generation

4. John Sallis II 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 (John ) was born about 1751 in Granville Co., North Carolina. He died about 3 Jul 1815 in Warren Co., Georgia. He was buried in Warren Co., Georgia.

In the book, "Georgia's Roster of the Revolution," on page 127 under the heading "Certificates of service in American Revolution," Col. James McNeil "With Power of Attorney," acknowledges receipt of warrents in Washington County for [and among those named was]: "John Salis." This paper is on file in the Secretary of State's Office in the state capitol. John Sallis' name is said to be on a monument in front of the courthouse in Warrenton in Warren Co., Ga. along with others who served in the American Revolution.
The name of John Sallis appears on a certified list of Georgia Troops, Soldiers of the (Continental) Line, Revolutionary War, page 375, of the Georgia Roster of the Revolution. He received a land grant of 287 1/2 acres of land in Warren Co., Ga. in 1784. Warren Co. was formed from Wilkes County in 1793. Land records show him living in Washington Co., Ga. 1789-1792. He was back in Warren County in 1797. In the book "Index to the Headright and Bounty Grants of Georgia" by Lucas, he was shown with 9 different land grants in Warren, Washington, and Wilkes counties totalling over 1287 acres. He was listed on the 1800 census of Warren Co., Ga. Evidently he lived there until his death in 1815. (He may never have moved at all, it may have been the county line that was changed.) The tax list of Warren County in 1805 showed John Sallis as owing 723 acres of land and 5 slaves in 1805. He was living in Capt. Newsome's District.
In 1802 (Warren Co. Deed Bk. B, p. 115), John Sallis and James Gray sold to Drury Mims land that was granted in 1784 to Drury and David McCullers.
John Sallis apparently wrote a will before he died. This will was presented to the court three different times but was never accepted. The first time it was presented, on 3 July 1815, it was said to have ben turned down because of "imperfections" and "illegibility." It was presented again on 6 Nov 1815. When John Sallis [II] died he was possessed of a considerable estate. Warren County records, dated 6 Nov 1815, show that after he died two of his sons, David and John, were appointed administrators of his estate. Also found in these papers were the guardianship records of appointment, dated 5 Feb 1816, for the four minor children of John and Faitha Sallis. David Sallis was named guardian of William and Susanna Sallis. John Sallis, III was named guardian of Robert and Solomon Sallis.

John married Faitha M. McCullers daughter of Drury McCullers and Elizabeth Hodo about 1780 in Ft. Augusta, Richmond Co., Georgia. Faitha was born about 1755. She died after 1830 in Warren Co., Georgia.

The 1830 census of Warren Co., Ga. shows Faitha living in the household of her son, David. She was shown as being between 60-70 years of age.

Joseph "Sallisbury" was granted 100 acres of land in Washington Co., Ga. in 1789.
When the will of Joseph Sallis was filed in Warren Co., Ga. it mentioned his wife and children but not by name. In the "General Index to Administrators, Executors, and Guardians (1811-1836) on page 36 of "Warren Co., Ga. 1793-1900 Genealogy II" by Crumpton, he is listed as "Joseph Sallis, minister."

One William Godfrey, age 50-60, and a female age 40-50 and one other male aged 20-30 was in the Laurens Co., Georgia census in 1830. The 1840 census of Laurens County shows William Godfrey with one other male aged 20-30 and a female aged 30-40. There were no Godfreys in Laurens County in 1850.
