The 1850 Mortality Schedule of Talbot Co., Ga. said he was 80 years of age when he died in January of that year. His will, written on 17 May 1849, was probated in Talbot Co., Ga. in January 1850. Witnesses to the will were Samuel Hart, Edwin Adams, and Jas. L. Picard. It mentioned grandchildren Cynthia Ann, Robert Washington, and Benjamin Franklin Cody. His son Lawson was named as executor.

11. John Seals Sallis III (John , John ) was born on 29 Sep 1789 in Wilkes (later Warren) Co, Georgia. He died on 21 Jul 1865 in Sallis, Attala Co., Mississippi. He was buried on 24 Jul 1865. John was counted in a census in 1810 in Warren Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census 1 in 1860 in Bluffs Springs, Attala Co., Mississippi.

John was guardian to his brothers Robert and Solomon after their father died. In 1821 John and Mary were still living in Warren Co., Ga. He drew land in the Dooly and Houston Co., Ga. land lotteries. He and Mary, along with other family members, left Warren Co., Ga. and moved to Tuscaloosa and Pickens Co., Ala. between 1821 and 1823. John "Silas" was listed on the 1840 Pickens Co., Ala. census. They moved to Attala Co., Miss. in 1848. The Treaty of Dancing Rabbit had been signed by the Indians on 27 Sept 1830 and the settlers must have felt safer moving into their territory.
In 1860 the census gave the value of his real estae as $5,000 and his personal estate at $34,500.
It is said that the last years of John's life were spent in blindness, and that "in the late afternoons he would call the young negro boys up to sing for him. All the Sallis family loved music and most of them had good voices."

John married (1) Mary Shows daughter of Daniel Snows and Mary Cody in 1812. Mary was born about 1790. She died before 1817.

John married (2) Mary 'Polly' Edmondson daughter of Ambrose Edmondson and Elizabeth May Green on 18 Feb 1817 in Warren Co., Georgia. Mary was born on 11 Nov 1793 in North Carolina. She died on 18 Aug 1859 in Sallis, Attala Co., Mississippi. She was buried in Aug 1859 in Sallis Cemetery, Sallis, Attala Co., Mississippi.

She died of "liver disease" near Spring Bluff.

Etheldred was counted in a census in 1820 in Warren Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census in 1830 in Upson Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census in 1840 in Russell Co., Alabama.

To date no official record has been found proving he was the son of John Sallis II. He was listed on the 1820 census of Warren Co., Ga., the 1830 census of Upson Co., Ga., and the 1840 census of Russell Co., Ala. Russell Co., Ala. was formed in 1832. Soon the Indians were removed from this area and the land was opened up for settlement. The first record of any members of the Sallis family in Russell County was "Dred" and Polly and their children.

Etheldred married 3 Mary 'Polly' Ivy 1, 2 daughter of Ephraim Ivey and Miss on 12 Sep 1812 in Warren Co., Georgia. Mary was born about 1790 in Virginia. She died 4, 5 on 30 Jun 1876 in Russell Co., Alabama.

Mary was listed as the head of a household on p. 16 A of the 1850 Russell Co., Ala. census. Also listed in her home was 17 year old Amanda, a 15 year old John Silas and a 12 year old James Silas. They were living next door to her daughter Nancy Garner.

After the death of Galba Matthews she is said to have married again and lived near Americus in Sumter Co., Ga. but I have found no record of this. On the 1840 census of Stewart Co., Georgia she was listed as the head of the household with five children still living at home.

Jane married Galba Matthews son of Meshack Matthews and Jane about 1812 in Warren Co., Georgia. Galba was born about 1789. He died 1 on 14 Sep 1839 in Stewart Co., Georgia.

"Galby" Matthews was listed on page 230 of the 1818 tax list and on p. 282 of the 1820 Warren Co., Georgia census. He was listed in Capt. Williams District. Galba Matthews was listed on the 1830 census of Randolph Co., Ga. Besides the two adults, there were 9 people under the age of 20 in his household. There was one in the 20-30 age bracket. The part of Randolph County where he settled was cut off to form Stewart County in 1830. Galba Mathews was selected to serve on the Grand Jury in Stewart Co., Ga. at the August 1834 term of court. He was witness to a deed in Randolph Co., Ga. in Nov 1834. He was a militia captain in the Stewart County Rangers. They participated in the Indian Wars in and around Stewart and Randolph Co., Georgia in the mid 1830s. He was said to have been killed at a political rally. The probate records show that at the time of his death he owned 20 slaves and 1405 acres of land.

Alabama officially became a state in March 1819. Robert Sallis/Silas moved his family to Bibb Co., Ala. probably shortly after his marriage, certainly before 1830. To date I have found no PROVEN descendants. They MAY have been the parents of the children listed here. Charlotte Silas was listed as the head of a household on page 131 of the Stewart Co., Georgia 1840 census. This was the same county where her brother-in-law, William Sallis, was living.

Robert married 1 Charlotte Matthews daughter of Meshack Matthews and Jane on 3 Nov 1821 in Warren Co., Georgia. Charlotte was born about 1805. Charlotte was counted in a census 2 in 1840 in Stewart Co., Georgia.

Have not been able to locate this family in 1850 census. A William Silas's name was drawn in the 1827 Land Lottery fot Hancock Co., Georgia. The land drawn was in Lee Co., Georgia.

William married Rebecca Holder 1 daughter of Jesse Holder and Mary Langston on 29 Jan 1824 in Warren Co., Georgia. Rebecca was born 2 about 1800 in Georgia. She died after 1860 in Barbour Co., Alabama.

She was living with her daughter and son-in-law, John L. Pierce, her daughter Effie, and their family in Barbour Co., Ala. in 1860.

He was counted in a census 2 in 1840 in Williams District, Warren Co., Georgia. He was counted in a census 3 in 1850 in Warren Co., Georgia.

After Susan's death he remarried in Dec 1840 to Mary ___. In 1850 three of his children by Susan were living with him. He was shown on the 1849 tax roll of Warren County in District 154.

This family was well known in Itawamba Co., Miss. The first of the family to come to the county were Solomon and Sarah. They had traveled with family and friends from Tuscaloosa, Alabama on their way to Attala Co., Miss. when, as legend has it, they happened upon "especially friendly and helpful Itawamba County folks" and stayed. They had apparently been on the way to Attala Co., Miss. where his older brother, John, had moved. He was living with his son Elias when the census was taken in 1880.

Solomon married 2 Sarah H. Kennedy 1 daughter of Maxfield Kennedy and Sarah Davis on 12 May 1831 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. Sarah was born about 1806 in Franklin Co., Georgia. She died 3, 4 after 1880 in Itawamba Co., Mississippi.
