100. John M. Sallis (Solomon S. , John , John ) was born about 1832 in Tuscaloosa Co., Alabama. He died 1 on 16 Jul 1882 in Elmore Co., Alabama. John was counted in a census 2 in 1880 in Cold Spring, Elmore Co., Alabama.

John and his brothers, Elisha D. and William R., along with some of their Kennedy cousins and neighbors, formed the James Creek Company and joined the Confederate Army. They went into service at Iuka, Miss. John was elected Captain of their company. They were sent to Bowling Green, Ky. and after evacuating that state they were sent to Ft. Donelson at Nashville, Tenn. under General William Nelson Beall's command. After the capture of Ft. Donelson they were sent to Camp Morton, Indiana. They were exchanged and later were at Ft. Lionidas Polk in the Meridian, Miss. area. When General Sherman invaded Georgia in May 1864, they were sent to Atlanta. They were in the Battle of Resaca, Kennesaw Mountain in June, and all the battles around Atlanta. After General John Bell Hood ws defeated at Atlanta, they were sent to Tennessee. They retreated from there to Tupelo, then retreated from Tupelo. They were sent by rail to Bentonville, in Johnston Co., N.C. He was surrendered at Citronelle, Ala. by Lt. Gen. R. Taylor, CSA, to Major Gen. E.R.S. Canby, USA, on 4 May 1865. He was paroled on 19 May 1865 at Columbus, Mississippi.
When the 1870 census was taken John and his wife Caroline were living together. However, by 1880 they were separated and he was living in Alabama with Nancy Adeline Inman Hathcock, the widow of James Hathcock. He apparently fathered two children by her during the time he was married to Caroline.
The Lt. John Sallis Camp #1776, Sons of Confederate Veterans was formed in Itawamba Co., Mississippi. Officers in 1999 were: Commander Michael Warren; Lt. Commander Ray Booth, Sr.; and Treasurer Dalton Ray Silas, Jr.

His occupation was listed as a house carpenter but that was then crossed out. All of the censuses showed him as a single man. However, his tombstone says "husband of Evelyn Brook." There is a tombstone for "Elize" Brook 1894-1937 so it is possible he married after the 1930 census.

Wounded at Petersburg, Virginia, June 22, 1864. Surrendered, Appomattox, Virginia, April 9, 1865. Died at Davisboro, Georgia January 5, 1901.

The family apparently used the "Aldred" name. He is probably buried in the family cemetery with his wife. One headstone was lying on it's face and couldn't be read by the transcribers.

Aaron married (1) Anna Lou about 1863 in Georgia. Anna was born 1 on 19 Mar 1842 in Georgia. She died on 23 Apr 1926 in Washington Co., Georgia. She was buried 2 in Aldred Family Cemetery in Davisboro.
