She died on 3 Jul 1983 in Bay Co., Florida. She was buried on 5 Jul 1983 in Travelers Rest Church Cemetery at Clarksville, Calhoun Co., Florida.

The 1900 census gave her birth as Sept 1896. She was probably named for her Aunt Exa, her mother's sister. Exie, as most farm people, spent a lot of time out of doors. In her later years she had terrible skin cancers which eventually led to her death. The last few years of her life she lived in a mobile home next to the home of her son, Astor. When her second husband died she was sick with measles.

Exa married 1 (1) James Frank Ward son of Franklin Jackson Ward and Mary Elizabeth Hughes on 28 May 1910 in Lowery, Geneva Co., Alabama. The marriage ended in divorce.James was born 2 on 19 Oct 1889 in Geneva Co., Alabama. He died on 27 Oct 1972 in Defuniak Springs, Walton Co., Florida. James was counted in a census in 1920 in Kinston, Coffee Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 3 in 1930 in Kinston, Coffee Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 4 in 1945 in DeFuniak Springs, Walton Co., Florida.

He was in the logging industry.

He died 2 on 8 Jun 1947 in Defuniak Springs, Walton Co., Florida. He was buried in New Hope Baptist Church cemetery, Covington Co., Alabama. Matthew was counted in a census 3 in 1900 in Green Bay, Covington Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 4 in 1910 in Green Bay, Covington Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 5 in 1920 in Precinct 22, Covington Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 6 in 1930 in Beulah, Covington Co., Alabama.

He was farming in 1900. In 1910 he was working as a laborer in a lumber camp. In 1920 he and his 2nd wife, Fanny, were living at Chapel Hill, 2 houses away from ParyLee's family. He was a "live stock trader." In 1930 he was a "woods rifer" for a lumber company. An odd co-incidence - in 1930 Math Rigdon was living next door to Hampton Montgomery - the brother of ParyLee's 2nd husband. Scott was living with his brother at that time.

From the Walton Co. GenWeb page (newspaper abstracts)-
Mathew E Rigdon, 67, died at his home in Red Bay Sunday June 8th following a

Exa married (2) Amon Francis Marion Miller Jr. son of Amon Francis Marion Miller Sr. and Catherine Marie Welch about 1916 in Alabama. Amon was born 1 on 3 Mar 1868 in Covington Co., Alabama. He died in May 1938 in Clarksville, Calhoun Co., Florida. He was buried in Travelers Rest Cemetery, Clarksville, Florida. Amon was counted in a census 2 in 1900 in Harrison Co., Mississippi. He was counted in a census 3 in 1910 in Gulfport, Harrison Co., Mississippi. He was counted in a census 4 in 1920 in Lawrence (Chapel Hill), Covington Co., Alabama. He was counted in a census 5 in 1930 in Precinct 22, McRae (Chapel Hill), Covington Co., Alabama.

Almost as soon as he turned 21, Amon Miller set up his own home. He homesteaded 160 acres of land adjoining his father's land. According to the Homestead Application on file at the National Archives in Washington, D.C., Amon first settled on the land in September of 1889. By the time he had filed a "Homestead Affidavit" in February 1890, he had already built a dwelling on the property. Amon established his actual residency on the property in March 1890 and set about making improvements to his homestead. By the time he had fulfilled the five years of residency on the property he had a frame house, a smoke house, a corn crib, 3 stables and had dug a well for water.
There appears to have been conflicting patents filed for 40 acres of the land. Amon Miller, Sr. wrote letters to the congressman from their district explaining what had happened. It took until 1913 to get everything straightened out but Amon Miller, Jr. received a clear title to his land. In 1899, Amon Miller sold all of the "merchantable timber" on the 160 acres to S.J. Manning for $356.80
Sometime before 1898 Amon & Mary Frances moved to Mississippi. In Dec 1898 they bought two lots in the little village of Bullis near McHenry in Harrison County.
The 1900 census said Amon Miller was working as a log hauler. It also said Mary was the mother of four children and four of them were still living. However, there were no children listed in their household. In 1910, the census said she was the mother of 4 children but none were living when there was a 6 year old John Miller in their household, listed as "son." (The Federal Censuses are known to be full of errors.)
In Mississippi, Amon Francis Marion Miller was referred to as "F.M." or Francis M." Miller. Upon arriving in Mississippi the Millers bought four lots in the town of McHenry. They sold these lots in Aug 1903 for $600. Then in Oct 1904, they paid $450 cash for 3 lots in the Standard Land Company's Addition to the town of Gulfport. By 1910, he was listed on the census as a "charcoal burner." Gulfport is said to have been an unhealthy place to live and apparently Mary and her son John did not survive long after 1910. Although no death certificates are on file in Mississippi for either of them, by 1913, Amon Miller had returned to Covington Co., Ala.
In the early 1930s he mortgaged his farm, said to have been 260 acres at that time. He was unable to repay the loan and lost the farm. The family moved to near Clarksville in Calhoun Co., Fla. about 1936. By that time he was already weak with a "lung condition." He contracted measles which "settled on his weakened lungs," causing his death.

They had the following children:

  3257 F iii Sabra Miller
Sabra married 1 (1) Gilford Burnett Scoggins son of Columbus Wright "Brisk??" Scroggins and Caroline "Callie" Mitchell. Gilford was born 2 on 19 Mar 1899 in Monroe Co., Alabama. He died on 8 Jul 1960 in Winter Haven, Polk Co., Florida. He was buried on 12 Jul 1960 in Antioch Congregational Church Cemetery near Andalusia, Covington Co., Alabama. Gilford was counted in a census 3 in 1945 in Carr, Calhoun Co., Florida.

Gilford had a reputation as honest, honorable, hardworking man. He was a tall, thin man with high cheekbones, prominent nose, and coarse, straight, thick hair. Family tradition maintains that his mother Callie was a full blood Indian. If this is true, she was probably Creek or Choctaw. Gilford, who was raised as a farmer, said his father also had Indian ancestry.
The time between Gilford's birth date and death date was a time of horseless carriages to jet airplanes, log cabins to skyscrapers, and horseback to highways. The 1920's was also the time of Prohibition. The 18th amendment to the U.S. Constitution, forbidding the manufacture, transportation, sale, or even possession of alcoholic beverages, was ratified in 1920 and repealed in 1933. Although Gilford never talked about it several family sources confirm the fact that Gilford was involved in illegal activity. In what capacity he was involved is not known at this time. About 1926 or 27 he was arrested on a bootlegging charge and sentenced to a year in prison.
Gilford met Sabra while visiting relatives who were renting a house from her father. Probably because of the age difference [he was 20 years her senior], as Sabra told it, her parents did not approve of her seeing him and the visits were kept secret. After about a year they "ran away" and were married. For the next year Gilford worked in the logging industry and they lived in a logging camp. Then they moved back near Sabra's parents and Gilford began farming. As with most young men of the South in his time, the struggle to support his young family was continuous until emphysema began to inhibit that capability.
Over the next fifteen years he was engaged in several professions. He worked on several WPA bridge construction projects in west Florida. One of them was "Ten Mile Bridge" located on Highway 73 south of Marianna. Another was at Ponce de Leon. But mostly he "share-cropped." He would grow corn, cotton, and peanuts. He never raised livestock except for his personal use, although he had a horse or mule to work the crops.
The family moved back and forth across the Alabama-Florida state line several times. When they were living near Blountstown in Calhoun Co., Fla. about 1936, He worked in the turpentine industry. He "chipped" pine trees. This wa done by cutting a "chip" in the tree just a few feet above the ground and attaching a container to catch the turpentine as it dripped from the tree. The turpentine was then sold to a company who distilled it. Turpentine was used as a paint thinner, solvent, or medicinally as a liniment. Later Gilford worked cutting crossties.
In 1945, the state of Florida conducted a census. At that time "G.B. Scoggins" occupation was listed as "farmer." He and Sabra and their children: James (age 10), Austin (age 8, Charles (age 5, Sarah (age 3) and Columbus (under one year) were living in Calhoun Co., Fla. in the Carr Community. They were getting their mail at R.F. D. 2, Altha.
Although he owned a wagon in the early 1940s, Gilford never owned an automobile until about 1950-51. If he needed to go anywhere, he walked. If it was too far to walk, he would hitch a ride with someone. The family didn't go to town very often. They always had a vegetable garden. Several places where they lived a "rolling store" came around. It carried all the "necessities."
About 1951 Gilford decided to move his family again. His brother, Mark, had moved to Dade City, which is in Pasco County in Central Florida. Gilford decided this was where he wanted to go. He hired someone to move his family and household goods while he hitchhiked on ahead. But the move was not without it's problems. The moving truck broke down in Tallahassee, Florida. The two older sons were left with the truck to look after their possessions while Sabra took the younger children on a Greyhound bus the rest of the way to Dade City. After the boys and the truck arrived, the family moved into a small 3 or 4 room house. Later, they moved into a larger three bedroom unpainted frame house on the same property. About that time Gilford bought a Studebaker truck. It was about a 1946/47 model.
While they were living in Dade City, Gilford worked picking citrus while Sabra worked in a citrus packinghouse. The large oak trees in the area were full of "Spanish moss." Gilford and the younger boys would pull the moss from the trees and take it by the truckloads to Bushnell to sell. At that time the moss was being used as a furniture stuffing.
Gilford moved for the last time in 1957. They moved to Winter Haven in Polk County. Probably the emphysema that was to end his life had already begun to take its toll on him. All his life he had smoked Prince Albert tobacco, a "roll your own" tobacco that came in a red tin can. The story was told that when he was still living at home, one day after a meal he tipped his chair back and proceeded to roll a cigarette. His mother, Callie, reached over with her foot and knocked the chair out from under him. The cigarette "fixings" went flying everywhere. When asked why she had done that, she told him he would not smoke in her house. And he said he never did. Gilford loved to fish. He was very patient and would sit for hours waiting for the fish to bite. It was said he could catch fish when no one else was even getting a nibble.
