PAINTED VENT PORTION OF TAILLIGHTS words by John Beerman 1990 LS coupe Cost: $3 - 5 Duration: 1 - 2 hours Material: black semi-gloss paint, newspaper, screwdriver Precedure: The section you want to paint is the little square section around the vent that is now red. This clashes with the clear (or it may be amber in pre-1990 models). I actually painted these twice because the first time I used a flat black paint. I just masked and painted but there is an easier was I found when I was replacing the gasket on the back taillights. The vent sector unscrews. This way you don't have to worry about dripping. 1. Open trunk and pull back any carpeting covering the vent portion of the taillight (I don't think there is any but there might be). 2. Take out the screws that hold in the black vent cover and take this off. 3. Now you should be able to see the back end of the vent part of the taillight. You should see a couple of screws that allow you to take just this portion off. Unscrew these. 4. Put this portion on newspaper and paint it with a very light coat at first. Repeat using about 2 - 3 coats of the paint until you can't see any red peeking through. 5. Installation is reverse. |
